Deep Litter

No-one is expected to make personal bitchy comments.

As I said if you can't say something pleasant then don't post!

That really isn't your judgement to make. If you have a problem with PS's post (or indeed, mine) feel free to report them to Admin for review. I'm fairly sure there has been no breach of T&Cs though... Do try to remember your place, Tnavas - you don't run the forum, so you don't get to make the call on what's acceptable and what isn't...

PolarSkye I was answering/commenting on each persons post, hence the reason for including their post.

Not coming across as forceful etc but using my experience from working in the equine industry for decades.

As previously commented, if you don't have something nice to say, don't post. Your comment was unesessary and has reduced a post to bitching.

I rest my case. I had the audacity to disagree with you . . . and now I am being bitchy . . . I would call that forceful.

Oh, and I wasn't unpleasant, or impolite, or nasty . . . I just pointed out that just because you believed something SHOULD be true (based on your decades of experience) didn't mean it would necessarily work for every single owner on the planet. I repeat - just because you think something ought to work, doesn't make it so . . . there . . . is that nasty? Is it bitchy? No, it's just contradictory . . . and maybe it's true . . . because what works for some equines (and owners) doesn't work for all of them :).

So, why should I not be allowed to comment on a personal attack by saying to that person "if you can't be pleasant don't post"?

You can say it all you like, but you can't expect people to take any heed of your demands, or indeed, not to post :)

Tnavas - it is possible that your sheer force of will isn't enough to "make it so" . . . ;.

Your top comment was not disagreeing with me but being bitchy about my comments.

I certainly don't necessarily disagree with you, some horses make their beds disgustingly filthy. If you have one like that then your in for the daily muck out. Deep litter may not work for them.

Whether you agree or disagree with me I don't really care, I don't expect to receive a bitchy comment because YOU don't agree with me. I try to answer people's questions as in depth as I can and without personal attacks!

I'm still not sure how you get bitchy from my comment? Challenging? Yes. If you go back and read the thread, your sole message was "deep litter is goooooood" . . . and my point was "not necessarily" AND "just because you believe it, doesn't make it right" . . . I even tried to put a little "winky" face on there but (d'oh) forgot to put the backward bracket so all you saw was the semi colon. That's all semantics, though . . . all I did was disagree with you - AND challenge you on the idea that just because you fervently believe in deep litter doesn't mean it will work with every horse . . . because the overwhelming message I read from you was that deep litter is the ONLY way to manage a horse . . . and I have a different opinion/set of experiences.

You can chuck the "bitch" card around all you like . . . the bottom line here is that all I did is disagree with you . . . and, yes, I will continue to post, and, yes, sometimes I will disagree with people . . . isn't that the miraculous thing about horses? That they are all individuals requiring different management?

I think being 'pleasant' is open to interpretation here. I didn't find PS's post in the least bit unpleasant. Certainly not as unpleasant as your suggestion that someone else should refrain from expressing their opinion on an open forum if you, essentially, don't like it/agree with it. In FACT, you should perhaps follow your own advice and not post comments that PS might find unpleasant...

The comment was very personal and directed AT ME - no one else.

I wasn't aware that I was posting anything unpleasant to Polar Ske - so she has found deep littering her horse is not possible - that s one horse in thousands - personally I find deep littering a great cost and time saver, especially when you have 100+ horses to muck out and half the staff haven't turned up because they were paid the afternoon before and spent the night at the pub and are currently hung over and not at work!

Express opinions on the subject being discussed but don't make personal attacks on other posters.

Have you considered that you're making a rather personal attack on PS? You've called her comments "bitchy" repeatedly.

I'm not sure any staffing problems you have been subject to are necessarily relevant to the majority of posters here who are private owners, so to speak, but hey ho.

Good Afternoon All! :)

Thoughts on deep littering this winter?
I was thinking of deep littering during the week (removing all poo and layering fresh straw ontop) and either Saturday or Sunday remove all the wet bedding and do a 'full muck-out' and also disinfect the floor with my Biofresh Ammonia spray!
I was going to do this with straw but was thinking of maybe using shavings underneath as they are abit more absorbent?
She will always have a thick layer of clean ontop so would NOT be laying on wet bedding!

Does anyone else do this?

Yes, this system worked very well for mine. I now fully deep litter (remove poo as it occurs sort of thing), and this also works. Mine are currently rarely in, so little point in disturbing the base. I definitely wouldn't use straw without a base of shavings myself, as both mine wee copiously.

Hope you have a good winter :)

I don't deep litter but imagine the cousin jack bedding would be great for it as you dampen when u make a new bed and is easy to pack down but nicer work with than miscanthus and smells lemony :) I use 3 to 4 bales a month for my girl I was going to use straw but use 3 small bales a week with her and she's a bed stirrer on straw and eats it even with genuinely as in more hay than she can eat ad lob hay so oth is bedding is cheaper for me . She's a smelly wet mare too and I only have to hang a hay net in her stable when she's on straw and I smell like a toilet , the cousin jack absorbs the smell better :)
