deep littering straw??

Yes but it does get very smelly if there is a lot of wee and not much drainage. I put a layer of a more absorbent bedding down as a base (flax or sawdust) and use the straw as a top layer - it is really easy to lift off the droppings and all I do is flick the straw up into banks so the base can air during the day. The base lasts all winter with mine, it dries out during the day except for my cushngoid veteran, and I hang a heat lamp over hers while she is out during the day. Much much cheaper than all shavings or rape straw etc.

I used to deep litter it, I added at least three folds of straw a day, took poo out everyday and took the wet out at the weekend. I would leave the bed up all day to dry the floor after I mucked out. I would sprinkle a product called Stable Fresh on the floor, then a good bucket full of Megazorb and then plenty of straw to cover it. I used to leave the banks and only turn them once a month.

i deep litter straw, on top of rubber matting. i do a nice thick bed. just do poo's every day and wet at weekends. find it works well, and my 2 share a large bed (in a section together in a barn) and both quite wet. really easy to get the wet out at the weekend as it clumps together nicely with the wet after a few days.
