Hi!
Ive decided today im going to give deep littering a go. My lad is wet as hell and im finding myself taking over a barrow of bedding out of his stable a day. He walks poo through something chronic and today i just scraped off the top layer and sifted through to get all the poo out, and found that overnight, hed managed to completely drown the entire bottom of his bed in wee! I dont know how he generates so much.
Anyway like i said im gonna give deep littering chopped straw a go. Any tips on managing it? Im expecting it to buid up with wet straw in places he wees, and it ending up being a massive massive bed?

Take out poo and any wet that surfaces. Move old dry bed onto the wet bits and chuck in more new bed.

I have one who spreads and buries poo so sifting the top layer with a shavings fork works for me (I'm on mats and shavings).

Its not smelly if you leave it to settle and stop disturbing it.Im on mats and shavings but have previously used straw its all down to management. There is a new product out that is supposed to prevent amonia smell biulding up you spray it on the bed.Its called biofresh I think . Might give it a try.

cellie is quite right, don't mess about with it and don't distrub the bottom crust that forms. When I say I sift mine it is only the top four inchs or so and the bed is about ten inches thick at the moment and growing. The smell comes from the wee hitting the air so try not to disturb it. One of mine pees half on the mats and half on the bed so I have to take that bit out regularly, other wise, just let it grow!

get ready for a huge huge dig out in the spring! have you got the water, door, hay triangle at the front of the box to minimise the bed trashing? a smelly stable is not good for you or for his lungs?

I agree with eveyone, its really hard at first to not interfere with it. Im really lucky that my lad wees and poos generlly in the one place and is very clean and tidy, so I find deep littering great for me. I just take out the poo's everyday and tidy the bed up. I make the bed quite deep so never get to see the wee. I tend to lift the bed once a week and take the all wee out and top up with shavings. Good luck, its not for everyone, and you'll find ways of your own to manage it, but worth a try.
