Just been researching past H&H Forum posts re the above. I always thought there were only 3 potential solutions for heavily mudded areas round gates and horse pathways to and from the gate: 1 = stable mats, too rigid, too expensive, would slowly sink into the mud + slither and slide 2 = cow mats, even more rigid though lighter and more maneuverable 3 = field mats, need a proper "base" or they too would sink. But I now discover a 4th option = old carpet! Covers the dips and folds of the mud, won't sink, dirt cheap. Obviously won't last forever but hey! Anyone tried this option? Experiences?

If it's hessian backed it work quite well

If it's foam backed it can get slimey and messy!

Personally I'm fitting my two eleven handers out with some stilts!

Agree with above - quality hessian backed wool carpet & 'face down' it can work, tho be very careful with youngstock as they can pull it up & chew it (so can adults tho!).

Please dont use the nylon fibre ones tho as have seen the results of that in large & small intestines during a (not successful) colic op :(

Yes last year and they also go hard when its freezing so easier to move if you need to set them straight. By the way howz your rescue shettie doing?
