I'm struggling with finding deep enough rugs for a 17hh ID - anyone got any suggestions for ones that don't cost the earth? He's 6'9" to 7' length wise

(p.s. Mastas , wetherbeetas and fal pro vikings all leave him with his belly hanging out and he's not overweight, nor does he have a "beer gut" :-D )

muchas grassias (I wish we had some green stuff!! Roll on the spring ;-) )

The Rambo Duo is very deep. I know it's not a cheap option but perhaps worth scouring eBay or similar for one and getting it reproofed, just to be on the safe side.

my mare is 16 hh he belly doesnt show and she is in a 6 ft 9 . you prob need a 7ft your fal was it a 6ft 9?

For my ID X TB this make was the only ones fitted her nice , still do Rambos were to tight across the chest for her, I am a snob dont like cheap rugs. I would rather buy one GR8 combi make than loads cheap ones. Mine stay in their Fals in and out lovely and deep dont slip

I dont like the clips Mark Todd and such have, Weatherbeeta have copied Fals fastening so, not as bad still I find you cant beat a Fal. I have all makes on my livereis on the yard but Fals take less time to put on as they are fillet string and when you throw it on normally always goes straight into position.

The other thing you can do is have an extra strip sewn along the bottom I did this with one of my old rugs and she looked like a hover crqaft going across the field lol

The rambo supreme is nice and deep (albeit not cheap) and what I used on my dear old part ID last year.

Rambo also make an XL rug which is designed for broader horses who need deep rugs.

Rambos aren't cheap, but they are the best on the market, IMO :)

Hi All
Thank you for your suggestions - I forgot to add he's a massive rug trasher (and fences too but that's another story) - hence why the cheaper end of the scale - he's been through all types - I always bought the better quality in the past believing they last longer which they usually do and are then cheaper in the long run. But this chap has other ideas!!:-~

So now I don't get expensive ones as he wrecks everything despite the quality!

Going to have a look at PE cos I can't bear to see another beautiful brand new fal or Rambo in bits :-(

Cheers ;-):-)

might have a go at sewing on some of the bits from the too far gone rugs - that's a good idea - I've got to be a dab hand at repairing these days!

Hovercraft here we come! :-) - maybe if he thinks he's floating he might stop wrecking my fences !

cheers

depfinitely the premier equine. If that doesn't go round him then nothing will.

Got mine about a month ago. I went for the Buster Trio ones but only bought the outer (lined) and one liner. Saves money and I think that will be plenty.

I found the PE good for depth with my ID but not so good fit over the shoulders/withers as the weetherbeeta ones. Rambo XL if you an find one and JHL also fit well.

My other horse has a tendency to rip my ID rugs whilst they are playing so I sympathise but try to get something with a high denier helps - nearer 1600 if you can as helps stop them trashing the rugs as quick ;) In the end I've gone for multiple rugs which get patched!

I recently bought a Caldene stable rug half price in a sale, hadn't used them before for rugs.

Lovely rug but very generously cut both in length and depth - I could have gone a size down to what he usually takes in weatherbeeta and fal.

They're not cheap to start with but because no one has heard of them they are often in sales

Countrywide do a cheap range of rugs (names begins with a k, cant remeber what its called) but they are cheap and they have a deep fitting, mines comes down to my horses knees and i agree that PE rugs are also worth a try!!

I have a couple of Fals and I thought they were deep until I bought an Amigo 1200 last year, this is really deep and it doesn't brake the bank :)

gone with a couple of PE ones - they're on sale at the mo' and really are fantastic value if they are as good as they look - BIG thank you for all your suggestions - cleared that up pretty quickly ! :-)

My chunky lad has no wither, his neck melds into his back with a gentle incline -the premier equine sits too high on the neck for him, also bit tight to do up the front due to his chest. I'm looking to try the big horse shop, but not sure of the quality

Thanks guys - Mastas last 5 minutes so not an option - just put my bargain buy beautiful brand new Masta on him 2 days ago - now has 2 foot rip down 1 side and the underside of the neck is all green - and b***er me I cannot find where he's doing it - although it could've been the electric fence he trashed yesterday (not the green) - think he uses the rug as insulation from the zap - grrrrrr :-O :-(

I've been super pleased with my two rugs from Swish Equestrian - found them to be great value, come down to his knees (he's a 17.2ID and deep with it) and fit really well all round. Rugs on their second winter in a field of three geldings who do play very hard and fast - always impressed when a rug makes it through more than one winter with them!! From memory I think they're 1200 denier which is the minimum I'll now go for.

I can recommend The Big Horse shop I bought a 1200 denier t/o for my ID 17.2 hw, slight seconds £35.00 fits perfectly, loads of chest room and virtually down to his knees, also couldnt see any 'seconds' about it, bargain ! I also recommend mains electric fencing on top of the fence stops rug tearing and leaning over fences, cheaper in the long run.
