Does anyone use the DEET fly repellant by Naff Off? It works really well but both my horses have lost a thin layer of skin, almost like a very light graze, up high on the inside of their back legs. Both are TB's so have very little hair there. I'm just wondering if the DEET is irritating their skin or it's something else

Our livery had the same thing

The black Naf with DEET is not suitable for sensitive skin!

On saying that Barrier's Super Plus has done this to mine, so I am going back to Barrier Enhanced formula that is ideal for spraying on the sheath area.

Oh thanks, at least I know what's done it now. When I saw my mare last night, I thought that's strange gucky sweat and then this morning the gelding had the same thing but I could actually see pink skin

It's a shame its not suitable for sensitive skin as its the 1st fly repellant I have ever used that works and keeps working even when the horse has sweated. I'll have a look for the Barrier stuff

It is very very good stuff, but is quite strong! Use the GEl on sensitive areas, I only apply the spray every other day....

Works brilliantly but my horse (who never reacts to anything) and another horse on the yard both reacted badly to it - they both came up in a bumpy area which then went scabby and it now looks like he has managed to graze the skin without taking the hair off if that makes sense. I am a bit peed off TBH as I did the recommended patch test for 24hrs as did the other owner, and we both used it fine for a few days before this reaction occurred. I have now stopped using it. On the plus side, it does not seem remotely painful for the horses, but it is so unsightly. I use DEET fly repellent on me (work outdoors) and have never reacted to 100% deet, but I can only conclude it is not suitable for horses, as I would not say mine is particularly sensitive or thin skinned.

We have used a very high % Deet on horses before with no probs, and it is fine on G, aslong as not used on a daily basis on sensitive areas. Thats why they developed the gel for ears/hairless parts!

Wierd that two v different horses reacted to it though - and mine reacted on his quarters just above his back leg and his back, so not particularly hairless/thin skinned bits. I have the gel too (came free with the repellent spray) but have not dared to use it after this!

Maybe other deet sprays are fine, perhaps it isn't the deet in the Naf one but something else?? I've used other naf products successfully, and was really pleased with how well this fly spray was working, so it's a shame!

Spotted Cat, that describes perfectly what happened to my two but only on the inner top part of their back legs, the rest of their bodies are OK so far. Like you it only happened after I'd be using it for a week or more. I'll try the gel on the sensitive areas.

100% DEET??

Jeez, absolutely nothing over 30% is legal in Canada because of the side-effects. Crikey you lot are kamikazes LOL!!

My mare is sensitive to deet, but will rub her tail if she gets bitten around her udder/mid line. I use Natural Equine Fly Off gel, it's aloe vera based and insecticide/citronella free and the midges don't go near it. No good against those damn horse flies though.

Complete brain funk moment - just checked the bottle (Jungle Formula extra strength) and it is 50% DEET. Presumably perfectly legal as it comes from Boots....

I use the spray for main body and the gel for face and sensitive areas of belly! i find they both work really well especially the gel when im riding

Yes I would guess that the British Govt wouldn't reduce the legal amount of DEET in products as it could give some of the Gulf War soldiers some ammunition for fighting their cause.

D'you see what I did there?? What a way with words I have sometimes
