I am not a horse owner. My Company has moved me on a 12 month secondment to Welwyn Garden City and I am renting a house nearby. I exercise myself and my dogs along a bridle path and run pass on a regular basis a disused horse-yard.
I have had reason to speak to the owner re. parking my excess furniture and in conversation asked him why his site was not being used, particularly as the site has a small x-country course, paddocks and a nice set of stables.
He said after his children and grandchildren moved on, having tried local horsey people, they turned out to be dole scroungers, thieves and working in the adult industry! He said he would rather "poke pins in his eyes" or build "ticky-tacky" houses on site. His opinion was "is anyone in the horse world capable of telling the truth?
He would rather hold party political activities on site because one knows he will not get paid!!
All people he has had the misfortune to meet are known unfavourably to the local horse yards.
However, any comments from yard owners would be welcome.

I would say he was letting the wrong people onto his yard as liveries then! In all my years of horses and all the yards I've been on (have moved a fair bit with work), I have never met any "dole scroungers, thieves" or people "working in the adult industry"! I've been on big yards, middle sized yards and private yards, and pretty much everyone has always been great.

He needs to rent it to one person take references check them out properly basically treat it exactly like renting out a house .

And then he can have happen to his yard what happened to this one! Wiring ripped out for the copper, everything else metal (gates, bolts, hinges etc) taken off for scrap, internal stable partitions taken down and burnt on the fires, caravans stripped on site leaving piles of caravan rubbish, land completely neglected, mega poo piles, ditches filled in with muck, piles of debris left around with dead animals hidden underneath. It was only rented to one person - it's just that she moved in the rest of the family :( As for the state of the house that she rented as well - OMG doesn't begin to describe it. After 18 months I think most of the debt collection agencies have now realised that the thousands of pounds run up at this address don't belong to me.

I'm a YO AND a tenant........ and have had a similar situation at a dwelling I used to rent out as "Jemima asking" has done; basically a guy came all to be interviewed all nicely dressed in a suit and tie, with a string of references (all false, I know now), and of course I rented the place to him.

He then let all his "friends" in and they were using the place to grow cannabis; when I suspected what was going I tipped off the local police and they raided it. The "tenants" had left the place in a state something like a tsunami had happened there. We had to have it fumigated (at our expense naturally); the vermin that were in the place had migrated to the other houses in the terrace, and then they all started sue'ing US because it was somehow our "fault"!!! You couldn't ever have made it up. And then we too had the letters from various debt collecting agencies, and all the unpleasantness with that.

This is why YO's and Landlord's are classed as "super-bitches"; we don't want to be, but there's some of us have had our fingers badly burnt in the past.

I sympathise with the YO mentioned by OP; he's unfortunately had a bad run of liveries cum "uninvited guests" and bad mud unfortunately sticks. I don't blame him for saying no to any more.

..if I had a livery yard, I would be a 'super bitch' and make people read the rules I enforce before they made decision. If they don't like it, there are lots of other places to go. Similarly, I'd be requiring references too....don't have any? Sorry, not coming to my yard! :p

And I have been a tenant on a yard where it turned out that the non horsey YO was well known to about every law enforcement agency going. In my 3.5 months there he was involved in using red diesil illegally, benefit fraud, illegal waste disposal, violent conduct, other fraud, building a house without pp & that's just what I know about. I wouldn't tar all YOs with the same brush though.

Problem it there is often two sides to a story- e.g. client paying for full livery, client turns up unannounced to find horses not being looked after or worse finds horses horsed drugged and it turns out that they are being drugged on a regular basis. Client leaves unannounced and refuses to pay notice = no reference.

How is that fair ?

Or you get thrown off because your OH is a police officer and the newly released criminal who's best mates with the YO doesn't like like this: not fair that you'd have no references in this case either!

There is good and bad in all parts of society.

It is very narrow minded to tar a complete group of people with the same brush.
