Definition of well marked?

Thanks Kacey88, its so incredibly true. My late girl was a striking red bay with black mane and tail. For years I thought her colour was boring, but I adored her stunning colour once I realised just how lovely it was. She had beautiful red highlights in her mane and tail too.

We tend to prefer horses with solid coloured heads - i.e. if they are wearing a rug with a short hood, then they would look solid coloured. Also prefer black or coloured tails (not white) and as much as possible to have a darker colour along the top line area so that judges are not tricked into thinking a horse has poor conformation when the background is light/dark. And definitely more colour than white.

It is also nice to have dark hocks rather than white ones, but this is REALLY difficult! White hocks, even with a horse with perfect conformation, can look lumpy - which never happens with darker coloured horses.

LOL FMM, well ours meets those criteria. When our new farrier did her shoes the first time she had a rug with a neck cover on. When he came back the second time and I led her out he said "whats that? I though I was doing the black" :D :D
 
do you think mine is well marked? i have alway thought he is becasue of the eveness of white to brown and the symmetry but what do you think

I was lucky enough to breed our boy hes homozygous so has a mass of spots and he has lovely suspenders over his shoulders and his bum to his legs which is how tobianos are ment to have often you will find that other colour genes affect the tobiano patten many coloured tobiano horses carry splash white and sabino and in some cases dominant white and this wll change the face patten a true tobiano does not have white on the face it is not apart of this patten.

My old mare - has pretty typical tobiano markings except for an area where there was slight roaning of the line between white and bay.

I considered her well marked

and her son Chico - after reading alot of comparing colouration and markings i believe Chico to be a Tovero - he is tobiano with some overo genes (namely sabino). From what i have been told it is likely Chico's sire was also tovero.

See I dont think he's well marked. I think he's spectacularly beautiful, which creates a pleasing image but if you transferred those markings onto your common-or-garden plod, they would look distinctly average.

i dont mean he is a super star horse - but that the arrangement of his colouration would be classed as well marked. He isnt badly marked at all, and you can't have 'averagely marked' - they are either well marked or not :)

I agree, I don't know much about markings but I actively dislike these! :eek:
For me, it's the white on the face and chin, which gives him a long, almost triangular face at first glance, and the black 'drips' down the inside of his legs I don't like.

Now this is a nice looking foal, reasonable markings (uneven black-white balance, but IMO it's better to have more black than white!) but look at that tail!
 
I am a complete ignoramus about colour. Can one of you knowledgeable people explain what tobiano actually means, please? And overo?
From a personal point of view I like the line of the bum/quarters to be coloured rather than whit.Otherwise they look weak quartered, to me.

See, I like how Billy is coloured - he is well marked to me as has more brown than white :p

His leg markings are pretty symetrical, and what you can't see is a small white patch under his chin, which is my fave! :D

He looks like someone has tipped a pot of white paint over his neck, and then wiped the excess off on his bum :P

Well, you absolutely know what you're talking about and what would go down well in the ring. However, its an opinion only but I see him as unusually marked rather than well marked. Not saying that's a bad thing however, as unusual is good!
