Whilst shooting today a friend told me about a piece in this weeks Shooting Times which was about Defra's new consultation on the Welfare of Dogs.

I have found it and read the whole thing

http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/welfare-dogs-cop/consultation.pdf

mostly common sense and it will be used as a guide for any court cases.

But I didn't know about this............

Controlling your dog
Although the dog licence was abolished in 1987, it is still a legal requirement under the Control of Dogs Order 1992 for a dog to wear a collar with the owner’s name and address on it.

Page 27 third paragraph.

And I think this is what is upsetting the working dog fraternity. There is absolutely no way I (or anyone I know) would ever put a collar on a working dog - its the first thing that would get it hung up, trapped and strangled, and of course this doesn't just apply to gundogs but farm dogs, sheep dogs etc.

Seeing as Defra replaced Maff you would think that just once it would consider the countryside perspective.

I think so long as the dog is working (be it sheep, gun, hound or other) than they do not have to wear one. But it is for the times when they are not working.
That is how I have understood it before but then again with DEFRA...

This is a bit of a bugbear of mine as well. I had to have a disc engraved for Evie for her Bronze KC Good citizens test, otherwise the dog warden would have failed her. I would have accepted if she had no identification but she has a tattoo , bit more permanent than a collar and tag! My dogs never wear collars other than being walked, I know of someone who lost a dog when 2 youngsters wearing collars were playing, one got its tooth caught in the collar of the other and before it could be released the other dog strangled.

My two greyhounds are tattooed and microchipped, but I refuse to put my address on their engraved medals - they just have my mobile number on one side, and 'Microchipped, please scan me' on the other. I have old fashioned ideas about people reading your address on the medal whilst the dog is on a walk, then coming along to steal it later

Is there no exemption to working dogs?

I know they're not in public but none of my dogs that are kenneled EVER wear collars in the kennels, too dangerous.

Can you imagine a pack of hounds all with collars and tags whilst out in a public place - LOL!

[/ QUOTE ]

Lol...does that mean that hunts are breaking the law?

Why do you refuse to put the metal disc with number and address?

Mine always wear one in public and a red clip that says 'Microchipped, please scan me' - think that's the more important bit!

As I said above - its because I have a fear of people 'meeting' the dog on a walk, reading the address and coming along to steal it later. Completely irrational I expect, but greyhounds are so steal-able (well, I suppose any breed is)

So I figure my phone number and the microchip is enough to trace me easily

I haven't been able to find any exemptions for working dogs anywhere - but would be grateful if someone else knows of any and could point me to a link.

I know it's a bit different but one of our cats broke her neck when she got caught up by her collar, for that reason none of our pets will ever were a collar unless they are being walked.

Sorry, but the flip side of the coin is that had the dog that attacked my daughters face in the summer, been wearing a tag, he would never have had the chance as would have been returned immediately!!!

I am furious that he didnt have one and had escaped from his garden and was able to attack a child.

She is left with nasty scars and the dog could well do this again

Tattoos and microchips are meaningless unless you have the equipment to read them.. which the average person does not.

Had he been tagged then one fone call would have seen him safely home.... instead of this my daughter has to live with her scars, and the owner is being prosecuted (at last) with who knows what happening to the dog at the end of it

The fact that the dog didnt have a collar on was of little consequence as the dog attacked zoe on private land (our road is private as well as our actual house)... the council were unable to prove that the dog had been in a public place... despite its apparent inability to 'fly' from her house to mine!!!

BUT..... she has obviously dropped herself in it... and admitted it wasnt tagged and out on the road.... as they are now prosecuting her!!!

Previously we had tried every avenue to get her prosecuted.... poice, council, house of commons!! and nothing... she gets interviewed and cocks it up for herself..... sweet!!!

My Mum was talking to me about the same thing earlier, she was most peeved!

Otto has a collar with a disc, which he always wears if he goes out the front door, but like Acolyte I didn't want to put my address on it, or his name.
It has my Surname and Mobile number, and when he gets a new one (his was just a quick "We Need a Tag" buy!) I will have my Surname and Number, Vet and Number and Micro-Chipped Please Scan put on it.

I've heard of dog's playing together and being strangled before too.
