Delicia update - the vet came today!

Good news but given how successful the Tildren was would they not consider medicating the SI joint?! Makes a lot of sense to do so in this scenario!

I think you mistook SusieT...she wasn't suggesting you were taking people in rather was concerned that you were being taken in. IMO I wouldn't take the word of an Olympic vet as gospel re breeding....they specialise in keeping horses sound for competition not breeding work. I use a completely different vet for breeding....would never call him for a leg injury but at repro work he is the best. I am also very surprised at the assurances that with pelvic/SI injury it is deemed not a problem for her to have a foal...especially when she is meant to be maintaining top line! Lunging her while heavily pregnant will put massive strain on her. Personally having seen the pain a racing mare retired through the exact same injury went through in late pregnancy and foaling I would never consider it. Best of luck

What about her PSD? Are they treating that and do they know the cause? As you know, my black mare had PSD and it alone caused her a lot of pain. I just wondered if D's is fixable?

I agree with this. I would not put her in foal until she is 100% sound on that SI injury. I remember being surprised when talking to the manager of our local stud. I was there for the covering of my clients mare and was chatting casually about how I would have loved a foal from my mare but she was retired due to a shoulder injury so I would never put her through it. The stud manager asked a little more about it and then told me she would have no worries at all with such a mild mechanical lameness of a front limb, but would not consider putting a mare in foal with even the slightest lameness behind, especially if in the pelvic region. I still didn't put my mare in foal though.

I thank you for all your replies. Nothing is set in some time wise. It's up to dee. :)

She never go diagnosed win PSD. They said I was normal wear and tear for her age and as it made no difference when nerve blocked they were not worried.

Appologies. I thought I'd read somewhere that she had PSD too. Happy that not the case. Good luck with the foal. I nearly used Amour G on my mare. He's lovely!

Ah yes you do :) It shows they are feeling better. My D wasn't herself if she wasn't cheeky! Having a foal is such an exciting thing (I've bred 3 and loved it!) but it's stressful too. My one piece of advice which I wish I'd thought of was to save up a bit of money in case something went wrong. Everyone gave me advice about getting her in foal, keeping her healthy, the actual foaling etc but I didn't bank on the filly getting a Clostrdium infection at 2 days old and costing me £3k in vets bills!!! Insurance don't cover them til they are 30 days old (they are obviously well aware of things that can go wrong in the early days). So that's all I'd say as I expect you'll get plenty of advice from much more experienced breeders than me! Good luck! Exciting stuff :) xx

Already on that one :) I have money saved up *just in case*. On day 30 I'm on that phone for insurance too lol.

Sorry I hear about your foalie. Did it turn out ok in the end? Delicia's being doing some natural horsemanship. She's loving it and very cute following me about like a Labrador pup!

I would be tempted wait until completely sound too before putting in foal especially if you hope that she may be able to return to ridden work in the fixture .
Until you have seen your once in work mare in the final stages of pregnancy it is hard to take in the strain it is on them ,careful with her wieght to try to keep her as lean as you can it does make it easier on them .

She was fine in the end thank goodness. Now a strapping 16.2hh rising 3yr old. My friend has just bought her and she's just fab. It was a very stressful time tho but I learned a lesson! Lol.

I've been doing a bit of NH groundwork with my new boy while he's on hols for the winter. Nothing fancy, just teaching him about personal space etc :) He's a big 17.1hh RID so needs to have boundaries. He seems to really enjoy it. He loves the attention and really focusses!

Goldenstar: my hope is by spring she should be sound. If she is she will go in foal. :) Delicia will let me know :).

Really pleased for you ilovefoals. :)

Thank you BGP :D

It's a good plan , have you thought about husbands yet , going for a Totilas baby perhaps at least you would be sure of the colour.

I would have to say that this would be my standpoint to. If you do not wait, and she doesnt come right, you would always think 'what if' I hadnt put her in foal... she is young enough to just wait and thus give her the absolute best chance/
