I posted a few days ago that a friend had died.
Friend always wanted to breed on litter from her two yorkies before having them both done. It was all planned. There was a list of people, mainly relatives who wanted one of the puppies if they ever materialised.

Now, after 3 years nothing had happened so they were booked in to be done a few weeks ago. She fell ill and with all the worry OH forgot the vets.

When I visited today I would have to say that bitch is in pup.

OH is grieving and not really animalfied. They were her babies.

I've helped with cats, sheep and horses but never dogs.
What do I do?/Need to know/Should be feeding her?

PLEASE no negative comments about breeding as I may lose the plot and may say something I regret later.
I want help and advice not a lecture on morals.
Sorry if I sound harsh but its been a hard week, and I am burying the second friend in as many weeks and a bit on the edge!!
 
Do u have them with u, is she whelping or has she shown signs, panting, nesting , circling ?

Do u have her vets number at the ready? in a small breed like this with 1st litter u may need the vet, best to be prepared, do u have a whelp box area ready?
 
Sorry to hear about your friend.
As Cayla says, is the bitch actually showing signs of whelping now? When was she booked in for spaying exactly, most vets like to do them mid way between seasons, so the timing might give you an idea when she was in season, if that makes sense. If the spaying was booked say a couple of months ago I would think it unlikely she has had a season since, but that could all be conjecture.

They are not with me at the moment. The dog is at his brothers so he only has the bitch. He lives over the road from me so they will be staying there as Her Majesty The Egg and Toby Toast would not tolerate a dog in the house.

She is not yet whelping the OH 'vaguely' remembers B saying something but he is not sure and thinks that by his reckoning she would be due at the end of January.
What size should a whelping box be? I'm gathering that size matters...not too big not too small.
I have a wonderful vet who I am taking her to on Tuesday-first day that I am free.
It wil be her first litter and she is 4 years old.

She is panting and peeing a lot!
 
Panting and peeing...she sounds in whelp to me just from that statement, I think there may be pups before tuesday! How long has she been panting and peeing?! Any other symptoms?
 
If she is panting and it is caused by whelping I think Tuesday may be a bit far away. She isn't drinking excessively is she? There are other things that panting and peeing are symptoms of, including pyo, so if possible I would try and speak to your vet. If she is near to whelping her teats should be quite full, and she may well be losing hair from her tummy, her vulva will also be swollen.
 
I would be concerned that yorkies and other small dogs of the like quite commonly have whelping compications. Given that nobody knows time scales etc and without actually being there we cant help much over the forum, I would be inclined to get hold of a vet tonight to be honest. Is she still panting and peeing(or straining to) now?
 
As Vizzy tates, yorkis are in the bracket of "needing help C section wise" so a vet needs deatails time from 1 whelp to the next, as a rule of thumb we like puppies to whelp atleast 2 hours between and not to much over that, and obs signs of exhaustion through prolonged pushing over this time needs monitoring, the panting is indeedy the first and most important signs, stress and temp can bring on the panting and both will be hightened during birth usually.

A bed, any bed in a quiet corner, with a flat bed and newspaper for the mother to nest on and ideally she should have been feed more and been on puppy food ideally.

Right now I know she is safe I can give more details.

She was panting yesterday and just wanted to be held, have human company.
She wasn't drinking anymore than usual.
B's OH had mentioned that she had peed in the house a couple of times.
He had put it down to the fact that yesterday there were people coming and going all day yesterday and that she hadn't seen B for over a week.
She does look a bit fatter and her teats are more noticable-that was what gave us the idea that she may be pregnant.
I'll keep you all updated.

She has not started nesting.

They are back from the vets and the vets thinks 2/3 pups and about 2-3 weeks away.
He thinks that the behaviour she is exhibiting is stress/anxiety seperation from not having B around.
They have come home with armfuls of food and leaflets.
B's OH has has asked that I pass on his thanks for all your help in this situation.

I promise that normal service will return, I'm just feeling wiped out at mo.
B is the second friend to pass away suddenly leaving children. Fit and healthy one minute..... R passed away just before Xmas leaving 2 kids. Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.
