Has anyone come across dementia in old horses? My 26yr old mare seems to have become rather vague in the last few weeks. She has always galloped round the park as soon as turned out, but has suddenly stopped. She still likes a run, but not straight away. She is 'suprised' by her haynets and feed every night, and has become very clingy to her son. She has a full bloods, with NAD. She's not in pain as when she does run she is sound. Having owned her since she was 7, I know her very well, and I'm thinking its a kind of dementia. Anyone else had this kind of experience?

Hiya,
my old horse showed similar symptoms. Would walk into gates when I was trying to close them, instead of turning around ( she was always great at gates ) going down the pecking order in the field. She was always 'top dog' but started getting picked on. Just looking vague and not herself.
I had the vet out, and she had cushings. She then started to get the other usual symptoms of cushings. I am sure though as your horses bloods came back normal she doesn't have that though! But just one for you to bear in mind. However maybe my horses cushings was unrelated to her dementia symptoms. Who knows !
Good luck though.

Cheers, I'll check eyesight, but she can spot the deer in the field and spook with the rest. Today she is standing watching my neighbour getting her new shed up, and thats about 1/4mile away.
