My friend and I help eachother to do jumping sessions because its much easier than having to keep getting off and doing the poles yourself. She watched me doing a grid exercise with my instructor and wanted to try it with her horse but he's being really difficult about it. He's a natural jumper and can easily clear the height he is being asked to do but doesn't bother to pick his back legs up and just charges straight through it. He'll do the grid as canter poles but as soon as we turn any of the poles into even a really tiny jump he just starts knocking the poles everywhere, both the ones on the ground and the jump poles. Any tips that I can pass onto her would be great.

By loose jumping them it makes them sort themself out. When i tried it first with my boy he was a sod and would stop inbetween the jumps to have a nibble at te grass outside the arena. I have persevered and he does it really well now. And it has realy helped him pic up his back legs when i ride him as he used to be very lazy. Try having two people therewhen you do it as when i tried to do it on my own it went very wrong hehe

Hope you get it sorted

if he is anything like pickle maybe he just doesnt find the height challenging enough. Pickle is absulutely fab over bigger grids but over smaller grids he looks like an absulute numpty!!

Mind you I've known Ellie to flatly refuse to go over a jump as it was too small and not worth the effort

Funnily enough he did clear the first one!!! he is a very good example of not trying over small jumps. Unless we are outside jumping!
