Just wondered if people enjoyed going to demonstrations and if so what they enjoy going to? and where had they been to see them?

Would you go to them on a weekend over the winter / spring?

Would you like something like a top rider showing certain techniques either themselves riding or with a pupil, maybe something like xc techniques on an arena, or grid work ideas, or green horse exercises???

what sort of money would you pay £10??

any other ideas of demonstrations or clinics that you'd love to go to but can't find???

I have been to a monty roberts one and that was good but I do always find demos a bit dull, cold, and often get a numb bum from the plastic chairs!

What I would really love to see would be a XC analysis demo with a couple of top riders on young horses and pros with a big screen projecting footage of their XC thrills and spills and them for them to receate XC style fences indoors and for them to purposefully ride it wrong in order to force and error and them to do it the right way. If this involved a good dollop of sports physcology too then that would be great. I know this is a big ask, and would probubly never be done but if they could also show you how to ride it wrong then it would be a great insight into many obvious mistakes ridres make and how to avoid them. Saying that pros horses are so well trained they probs wouldn't be able to get them to do it wrong maybe if there were some willing amatuer guinea pigs to lend horses that woul work.

Sorry got caught up in fantasy demo idea, don't think anything like this exists but I would deffo pay to see it

I did a Lucinda Green Clinic as a guinea pig, I thought that worked really well, there were 2 guinea pigs. Me on Mary before she had met any skinnies etc and another girl on a 4* horse.
Because we didnt get it right, Lucinda was able to tell people what did need to be done to get it right.

I also went to a WFP demo, Kerilli went as well, I thought that was a bit waffly, and did not really show any thing clever/new to me, but still a good evening non the less with some interesting things to take home and think about.
Both of these where held at World Horse Welfare. Cant remember how much they cost tbh, LG was free because I was a guinea pig, i think WFP was £20.
 
I have been too some demo's and loved them but have also been to a couple held by top SJ'ers where they clearly haven't prepared anything or thought about the content of the session and spent the time ' messing about' ad hoc . The last one I went to had the rider and his wife spending most of the evening promoting their stud horses and her new books coming out. At times I felt I was in a sales seminar. I wish they would remember that people have in most cases paid a lot of money for tickets and are there to learn aswell as be entertained.

I would really love to see a clinic whereby the riders weren't on push button horses and could show us how to cope with dirty stops etc as most of us will be dealing with that at some point.
 
I would like to go to a clinic whereby a couple of amateur riders brought horses to have a session with an event rider. I would like the 'pro' to ride each horse after seeing the riders warm up and then teach them from what they observed and felt.

I have watched a lot of clinics where I thought the trainer was teaching someone based on a couple of minutes observation. I have taken part in clinics where I didn't get a lot out of it because the trainer didn't know anything about me or my horse and had made a judgement based on me trotting round for a couple of minutes.... when what I really wanted was for them to get on and feel for themselves

I would like to participate as a rider but I would also be happy to be part of the audience......

Wonder if H&H would be interested in part sponsoring an evening such as this....? Admin? - a free idea for you and a great magazine feature

Chloe, this is afaik exactly what BE have just done for their XC training vid, done at A le W and filmed by EventingWorldWide.
rather than using actual existing footage of bad riding (god forbid, i mean, we're all perfect aren't we, no way could any eventer possibly cope with having their technique criticised, or an error pointed out, talk about Politically Correct gone crackers) they persuaded Angus Smales (i'm sure i was told it was him) to ride into various fences all wrong (on an experienced hunter, iirc, but could be wrong there too!) and then to do it right.
can't wait to see it, from what i hear he was very brave!
Cullohill, i've been to quite a few, also lectures by vets which are always fascinating... we all want to get a vet to just talk to us for hours imho!
i'd love:
top sport horse vet talking about: conformation and its effects upon long-term soundness (with horses to illustrate different points perhaps), avoiding injury in the sports horse.
top rider of any discipline giving away some secrets!
sometimes the guinea pig ones work, sometimes they don't. if the guinea pigs can't do the exercises it can be annoying to watch. or, if the guinea pig horses are perfect and a million times better than anything anyone in the audience would have, esp dr horses, it can feel a bit pointless to try and learn from, like trying to learn to drive my car by watching F1!
people i'd travel a long way to see, not care much about the cost, and be prepared to freeze my butt off for (big problem at winter demos, but i have frozen for the cause more than once!):
Toddy, the Freddos, Gerd Heuschmann, WFP, Pippa, any top sjer - have seen some fab sj lect/demos, Carl.
prob lots more i have forgotten.

Think that some sort of 'why it went wrong' analysis would be mega, and if they could film you then immediately play it back and have a sort of 'what do you think went wrong/right?' bit with the pro the amatuer and the audience contributing that would be fab.

I had something similar to this at the BE CDT day I went to maybe BE should consider expanding the CDT's reach and role out analysis demos accross the country with guinea pigs and pros they would make a killing! maybe then we could have another new website

ah ha so that is an extention of the 'rider analysis' part of a BE CDT day, good. When is this video available to buy?...

They should expand this further into clinic/demos accross the country thereby raising safety standards, and awareness for more BE members accross the country, it's a great idea...infact why ahven't they already done it??? K do you have any inside scoop on this?.... you are our BE secret squirrel!

I like that - INTERACTIVE! I always learn more and retain more if it is visual....verbal lectures just don't work for me.

If it was Matt he would get you jumping glasses of wine.... fine by me as long as you get to drink it afterwards

yes I deffo learn better when it's interactive, if you are made to analyse and critique yourself then your brain has to do the leg work the lesson is more firmly learnt, because when someone points out your mistakes they then become obvious it's realising them yourself that is the tricky bit I think

I wouldn't mind jumping glasses of wine! this sounds intriguing!!!!

Kerilli are they publishing the video footage from ALW? i saw the camera at the fence and wondered what it was for, would love to see footgae....
 
At my yard we are having one soon with a dressage judge and a number of riders at different levels (a HHO:er is the Medium guinea pig, incidentally!) riding dressage tests. The audience will mark the tests, as will the judge and afterwards there will be a discussion and explanation as to why the judge gives the marks she gives. I think this is an interesting concept and look forward to it (and how well it works!)
 
I have been to a few and actually I would like to see a panel one made up of different eventers to bounce around ideas with maybe topics. Such as treatment at 3 days, solving common problems, what they look for in a horse etc. I also find vet ones interesting and getting access to interesting people.

I think that could be really interesting.

I found Tim Stockdale a bit basic, I enjoyed Chris Bartle but could have done with more time as his was quite detailed.
