I was rather shocked to fine half a gun shot cartridge in my Hi-Fi, anybody know how Dengie carry out there quality control, at the present moment in time I'm almost sifting (sp) the stuff before putting it in my horses feed, rest of the bag seems ok, this was three quarters of the way down the bag.... Should I contact Dengie and post them details of the batch number and the cartridge.....

I most certainly would contact them, that could have caused an injury if you hadn't noticed.
I've found large stones in mine before, didn't do anything about it though, but you might get a free bag or a discount off your next bale

Ive just given a bag of HI FI Lite away. Was not impressed at all!! Didnt get far enough down the bag to see what goodies I may have had in mine though, the smell was enough to make me wonder about the quality. Never had a bag of chaff smell of fish before!!! Pony hasnt scoured for over a year until she reluctantly started eating this!

I haven't used Dengie for a couple of years now as there were a couple of issues - I did tell them but nothing was ever said or done about it so I use TopSpec instead .

Mine smelt of fish to - I have the worlds greediest horses and they wouldn't touch it - was the Alfa A as well as the Hifi Lite.

Thanks guys, going to contact them regarding the foreign body, but must say I've not had the fish smell, but last couple of bales have smelt sweeter, have tried the Molasses Free, which was great, but difficult to get hold of, think I might look into TopSpecs chaff.....

I use Alfa A Lite as its suitable for laminitics, it smells lovely, I had a bag of hi fi lite a few months back and is smelt really sickly sweet, I have no idea what they're adding to make it smell like that

I was thinking of trying the mollases free but after speaking to Dengie decided to stay on the alfa a lite because the mollasses free is high in oil, I like the option of adding it if required instead

I had a bag of good doer which was full of slate and tbh rank....big stuck together mess.
I sent Dengie a rather vile email, I dont appreciate paying £14 for a bag of feed that cant be fed! They sent me a voucher for a new bag of Good doer and a money off voucher....
The woman explained that sometimes slate is too big to get through their sifting machine so isnt always picked out.
Personally i think that now they`re making lots of Money they dont really give a damn about the product.
Email them.

Hi i also have used hi-fi lite for years for my laminitic horse ,i have found it varies in colour and never gives me the impression that it smells that tasty ,but last month i brought a bag and it was a lot greener looking than before and smelt unpleasant so did the bag i brought last week the same, have also used good doer and topspec version and they do smell much nicer,.

Hi , have used hi-fi lite alot for my arab mare and quite often it was mouldy half way in - although this could be how it was stored at the feed merchants , I now use spillers cool fibre for my 6yr old ID boy and it's lovely , oh and i also changed feed merchants!

Have been using it for years and have never had a problem with the quality but have had plastic strapping in 2 bags. Wrote to them and got money back plus vouchers for more feed. Occasionally find small stones in her feed bucket - I suspect they're from the Hi-Fi but cannot prove it!

What would you recommend as a replacement?

I've found plastic strapping in my bales too- was sent voucher for a free bale so definitely complain. I also enquired about the change in the smell, and was told they have changed their supplier of vanilla and it would smell sweeter until they got the 'dose' sorted.

Our last two bags have smelt unbelievably delicious, of butterscotch! So much so that I worried there was something wrong with it as it smelt too good for horse feed, I wanted to eat it myself!! Guess that's the vanilla dosage then?

Ive found plastic in mine before but a shotgun pellet is shocking - definitely contact them!

I don't use it anymore as I found the last few bags I'd had were a bit off and very sticky. I use happy hoof now instead.

We have used Dengie products for years bu recently have had 2 bags of Hi Fi + apple which smelled musty/mouldy. The horses would not touch it, to be honest I threw them away but after reading comments here regret it, should have returned them. I have since changed back to Mollichop btw.

Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I've found two plastic thingys in my bag of Hi-Fi lite that my OH did say looked like the end of shotgun cartridges!! Luckily the ponies didn't eat them. I just wondered if this was still an ongoing issue, as I notice the thread was 2011 and I remember the last time I had a bag (last year sometime) I found something in it then. Just how the heck are they getting away with it? I normally feed slim-chaff and only got this because I forgot to ask the merchant to order it in in time. I was planning to take it up with the supplier, but keep forgetting to get the batch number off the bag.

I have stopped using Dengie Hi-Fi, despite my horse being on it for many years. Apart from the bits of plastic strapping I found in 2 bales, I found some huge stalks of Alfalfa appearing in every bale I bought and generally the quality wasn't as good. My old horse had a problem with this, so I decided to change to a more "palatable" feed.....I now use Spillers Cool Fibre, which is really great and my mare just loves it!

I've also stopped feeding hi-fi lite now.

I bought it consistently for years and was always happy with the look and smell of it, no problems.

From about 3 or 4 years ago and onwards I found that the chaff suddenly went from a free flowing clean looking feed to a darker colouring, with clumps of pure mollasses in each handfull. Also, it almost seemed to come out in large wafer like chunks and was quite difficult to empty into the feed dustbin. It almost had a powdery feel about it too.

Ive changed onto the Countrywide alfalfa chaff, which is exactly the same as the hi-fi Lite, but with absolutely no mollasses and no preservatives!.

Very happy with this chaff, it's like how Hi fi Lite used to be!

If you're feeding something that Dengie market as "mollasses free" then have a good look at the sugar content of it............ coz its NOT!!!

They have got the "Laminitis" association stamp of approval, but basically a vet told me once that anything with the sugar content of their stuff should never ever be fed to a laminitic, or a sweet itch either :(

Think they need to be more honest about what they say about their gunk:(
