Just want to get a general over view.

q1) do you use Dentist or Vet?

q2) how often do you have the Dentist or Vet? Regularly or As needed or both?

thanks :)

Dentist (a good recommended one!) would be my choice having gone the vet route.

A well regarded large equine practise managed to half rasp my mares teeth, forget to do the backs and cut her cheek - she didn't move a muscle through the whole thing so no idea how they managed it! They left very sharp edges on her backs which were causing ulcers on her mouth - I had no idea of that until the dentist came out and asked when she was last done. I felt awful. Magically the headshaking/intollerance of a noseband disappeared overnight!

We did have him out every 6 months, but he said we really don't need to as they both have good mouths and there is nothing to do, so he has recommended that they only need checking once a year.

I use my vet as he has all the equipment and the horses know/trust him. I have them checked once a year when they have their vaccs done, unless my vet advises otherwise.

I use an EDT, Shane Kitching is the best dentist I've had, very up to date and has a brilliant way with tricky horses.
Having watched a gentle horse on my yard be sedated by two different vets for a dental check, I'd prefer to have an expert in dentistry who isn't going to reach for the needle and power tools as a first option.

Mine get done as required, usually a check every 10 months unless one has a dental condition and needs more frequent care.

I use an EDT and have him out once a year. He's got a fabulous way with the horses and doesn't smell like a vet to them (good for one of them who's not too keen on the vet).

However, if they needed to be sedated, I would probably use the vet as I know people who use my vetinary practice for teeth and have had no probs.

There are good and bad ones in both. with my previous horse the yard had a dentist down to do teeth so I had him do mine. Wont go into details but it ended up with my horse stressed out and had to get vet out for colic.

My new mare needs to be sadated as she hates getting her teeth done at the back. So I use my vet for her teeth. When we went through a batch of choking I had a EDT out when my vet couldnt find a reason and EDT also said there was nothing wrong with her teeth. So will stick with my vet who does a good job and can sedate when he needs too.
