Hi folks, my horse had his first ever encounter with the dentist yesterday morning, he's just 4 years old. He did quite a lot of work as his teeth were very sharp and the dentist had to let one of his teeth come through. He said that would be uncomfortable for him for 24 hours but he would be fine after that.

So I'm wondering if if would be okay to ride him tonight? I dont want him to be in any pain! I just wondered what your thoughts were on when to ride? He's currently being brought back into work after an injury so we are walking and doing little bursts of trot so nothing too intense.

Thank you!

If in doubt I would always wait a bit longer- a friend of mine had her TBs teeth done and there was nothing unusual, just a normal rasp, she rode him less than 24hrs later and he reared straight up- something he had never, ever done before. Saying that, my horse has always been fine and not bothered about his teeth.
When my youngster had a lot of work done to his teeth I lunged him in his bridle in side reins before getting on board so I could check he wasn't too sore and wouldn't misbehave!

I dont want him to be just "fine", I want him to be happy and comfortable :) He is my baby after all!! Might leave it another day just to be on the safe side in case he's still a little sore. Thanks!

My daughter has 2 x 1hr team trainings with her pony tonight - and last night my lovely dentist rang and said he's coming today at 4 (I sent him a text 2-3 weeks ago which he acknowledged, we are fine for last minute so that's why almost no notice) I queried would he be OK to ride at 6pm (will only be rasped) and he said fine. We've ridden him same day and he's been fine before. So if yours said he would be fine after 24 hours I'd say go for it but keep an eye on him and stop if he seems uncomfortable, just use your common sense.

Had my boys teeth done last week and asked my dentist about this and his answer was it depends how long the work took more than what was actually done.
He said that the jaw is more often the thing that is sore if it has been opened with the (horrible mouth opening thing) sorry name escapes me for a long time but a normal rasp taking just 10 mins would not be sore.
