Deposit paid, buyer disappeared, how long to hold the horse?

3 weeks before Christmas someone bought a weanling from me, paid 10% deposit and we arranged that I'd keep her for 2 weeks whilst he sorted out his barn. After that board was agreed at $5 a day. Fine by me.

Well, despite my calling the number given (no answer) and emailing (no response) daily I'm getting a bit peed off. I've turned away other enquirers about the filly, but am now thinking oh sod this for a game of soldiers and have emailed the buyer telling him collect and cough up or I re-advertise at the end of the week.

So, am I being fair, or should I keep a horse just on the off-chance that the buyer may remember he bought her?

What would you do?
 
Sell, I'm afraid. They must have broken the terms by not paying the extra board. I hope nothing serious has happened to them, though

Write (preferable) or email stating that you will attempt to re-sell the horse to mitigate your losses and will return the deposit to the would-be buyer on request, subject to deductions of your reasonable expenses (unpaid board until sold and re-advertising costs). In other words, the would-be buyer is unlikely to get anything back once your costs are deducted.
 
Just called the number again, I always get an answering (but not messaging) service, trogged off the daily email too.

By this Friday the board will be equal to the deposit paid, so he won't be getting a penny back.

I charge per day rather than by the week (it works out the same) because people here are pernicketty and fuss about paying board exactly to the day. I just say "Oh 5 bucks a day then!" and they all go "Yep sure" as if they are getting a better deal!

i agree with all your thoughts and feelings about this situation, but do remember that some people go away for the festive season.....so i would give it a little longer..

I don't care if he's gone away for the entire year, I just want to know what is going on, I am happy to board the filly for him. If I had bought a horse and couldn't collect for some reason or other I am damn sure that I'd let the seller know. I simply do not understand the mentality of buying (or promising to buy) and then not doing anything about it. Nothing has happened to him because he has been seen in the feed merchants.
