I'm going to Tromso, Norway in 10 days time for a long weekend...

..It's in the Arctic circle so we won't see daylight the whole time we're there!!

I hate the winter short days...I must be mad.

Hopefully we WILL see the Northern Lights instead though

It's the 21st every year but depending on where you are, the sunsets sometimes don't get later til after the 21st.

Incidentally, I think today is the day they say goodbye to the sun until it appears again on Jan 15th. Then it reappears for 44 mins

yes ... BUT where I am, according to sunrise & set the actual difference is not noticaeble till the 25th..the evenings are actually still getting darker earlier every night till about the 21st but geographically..the 25th is the big day as far as lighter eves are concerned..all 44 seconds lighter for the first one!!
ETA re the wildebeast thing..would quickly like to add I was referring to the muddiness of it all..rather than anything hairy!I never forget seeing the doc of the wildebeast struggling in the mud when the monsoons came..it was awful to watch and has stayed in my mind ever since I moved here!

I thought Samhain was October 31st? I've heard of the winter solstice being celebrated as 'Yule', but someone told me about something else, beginning with S. I'm now thinking she got mixed up with Samhain!!
