I have a welsh cob who suffers with dermatitus at the back of her knees. She is very sensitive and doesnt even like her mane being pulled. She wont let me near this leg to clean or treat it .Ive tried putting sudocream on but she wont even let me do that now.I have some sedalin of the vet but prefer not to use it if possible.Any ideas on treatment or cures. The vet suggested antibiotics but I dont think its infected just sore.Ill try clipping her again after Xmas to help the air get to it but wondered if anyone else has similiar problems. She hates being clipped as well!!!!!!!!

This condition is very common in cobs and is related to them having genetically thinner skin on the back of the knees thus making the skin weaker and prone to these skin problems. Sometimes a 'flair up' may be due the a mite that due to the weakness of the skin attacks here. \if you can you need to get a wormer [ invemectin based ]and rub that on the area it may be this that is stopping you making any head way, so try and clear up the problem and then we use udder cream as this is a good barrier, mild antiseptic and you can use lots as it cheap. The cob that we have a problem with must have been very roughly treted over this and someone has run the clippers over this area in his past and not been gentle about it, hence now you can not get near him with clippers so we have to sedate him to get near him. We use this time , every 6 to 10 wks to get his knees sorted.

Our old clyde still gets this despite religious applications of pig oil and sulphur. When his flares up, I soak the area in P&S so it softens the crust which I can gently rub to remove.

If it is really sore I coat it in sudocream mixed with sulphur and tea tree oil.

You may find keeping the area having regular applications of P&S helps with the problem. P&S is excellent at stopping mites which create the grease problem.

If you are bored and want a very long PM about using P&S, PM me and I'll send you the one I do on the subject.
