I'm trying to work out whether "dermoline insecticidal shampoo", sold in bottles of up to one litre, and "dermoline insect shampoo", sold in containers from 5 litres, are the same thing. The insecticidal shampoo claims to kill lice and lists an active ingredient. The "insect shampoo" doesn't claim to kill lice and lists no active ingredients. The tack shop tell me they've "always sold them as the same" which isn't very conclusive and the manufacturer Battle haven't responded to my query. Is there anyone out there who knows the answer? Thank you, from my itchy horses 😃

It looks like they just changed the labels? Both are available in 1 litre and 5 litre bottles. Every time I find one on line advertised as "inspect shampoo" the image that comes up is actually the "insecticidal shampoo" which suggets perhaps battles changed the labelling and the tack shop has old stock?

If you make a claim on the label then you must list the relevant active ingredient. The insecticidal one says it kills insects - and correctly lists a low level of Pyrethrum which does kill. It is quite probable it is in the other one as well - the level is so low you don't have to include a disposal warning to avoid environmental contamination (which would be daft in a shampoo anyway!) If you are worried opt for the insecticidal one - if nothing else it looks like it might be a more recent batch and pyrethrum does degrade.

Thank you so much for this. I went with the small bottle and they've all had their patch tests today. The sensitive one came up in hives briefly 🙄 but they went down quickly so if we have no other ill effects I'll properly douse them all tomorrow. It smells far too pleasant to be effective but I daren't try deosect on the sensitive one, he reacts to EVERYTHING.

I went with the insecticidal one (small bottle).

I’ve always used the Dermoline insecticidal shampoo, it’s great stuff for itchy types :). It’s been around for ages.

You leave suitably diluted dermoline on for IIRC about 10 mins before rinsing it off.

Though I thought that the insectidal shampoo must have been discontinued as I could only find the tea tree oil version on the Hope Valley Saddley website, so I’ve just got a new 5L container of that. I hope it’s as good...
