(Sorry about the writting it's 6am)
Yesterday morning
I was at freinds when I got a call from livery Becky..who been called by Pam...who'd seen Dermot down since she arrived at the yard like an hour ago...She had also read a note from Gorden who couldn't think of away to contact me but from 6am to 7am Dermot hadn't got up. Becky told them to get his rug off and get him up and walking to stop him going down. I called vet and drove from Chichester to Arundel ( takes normaly say 20/30min drive) in more like 5min...Fast lane all way...Fast as this little car could go....Even over took sports cars
I took over from walking him around until vet arrived, he examied Dermot and It became clear he needed to get to hospital asap. He had mild colic but my god when he did get down the once with me it took a hell of alot of pushing and pulling to get him up again. Thank-god Rosemary (who I don't really know on the yard) is sent from god in these situatuions and was hitched up and on the road in 10min. When he arrived he firstly had a big tube via the nose into his belly (Dermot helped with as little as possible to make it look worest and make you want to faint more) He put 3liters in and got 1 and 1/2 buckets out....So this suggested worest porblem...small instestine. A blood vesle got hit during this and blood flowed from his nose (So nurse took over from me holding Dermot at this point before I was sick...) Next was a scan...Again the worse was seen as the small instetine (which isn't always inflated therefore shouldn't be visable) was clear to see and hardly moving. He had to wait for next test so we got a break while Dermot was put on a drip. He didn't get best results in eye/neverous system test either. So it was confirmed this looked most like grass sickness.
The surgory was booked for 4pm.
I got a chance to say goodbye to my main man just in case....
Minuits really did turn to hours waiting for the vet to call when he was on 'the table' after they had looked for any other probelms. They had found a 'thing' (I didn't really understand this bit at the time) It could be effecting him, so they could opirate it remove it but it would cause more stress to him and the after care would be very instentive. He could still have grassisckness (they were doing the biopsy regardless) We decided to go for the opiration as well (At this way we couldn't regert not trying..There goes the horse box though..)
I got a call at 8:30pm from the surgent telling me he'd finished the opiration and he was now recovering (though not around yet as it was a long sergory) He said that we had made the right choose because this 'thing' was contracting and getting worse, if it hadn't been removed Dermot wouldn't of had a chance of recovering even if he was positive for grass sickness.
I'm not to get any hopes up because the chance of Dermot leaving the hospital has always been small.
I just thought I should update you. I really don't need 'aww that must be so horrid for you' because that really doesn't help.
Please just think of him.
Afteral he has really looked after me in the last few months. Espesicaly after I lost turst in equine to a riding accident. Dermot really is a one in a million horse. I won't be able to replace him. This horse that was sold to me as totaly unsuitable because he wouldn't let anyone on his back but he gave me and my novice dad the best riding memorys we have.
I just hope he had as much pleasure as we did. x
