Because he wanted to. He could have gone round every single fence and not jumped another thing. He could have stopped and eaten grass or stared off into the distance. But he didn't he didn't interfere with anyone and jumped his way round with his ears pricked.

There is no racecourse where you can't go round every single fence - they even changed the National fences so you can go round pretty much all of them. Before any horse that got stopped between fences they would have to removed railings to get them out. Now it's easy to scoot round.
 
Not so long ago there was a loose horse that jumped round the rest of the course and then he accelerated up towards the finish and passed a couple of horses so that he "won." I bet he was pleased with himself.
