"Designer" breeds. Does anyone have one?

Following on from Twiglets Labradoodle thread. I just wondered if anybody has one of these, the variety that are being bred here is incredible. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/poodlemix.htm

I had friends in the UK who purposely bred small breeds such a poodles, yorkies, pugs and chihuahuas in all sorts of combinations and were selling them for silly money.
 
These are not designer breeds, they are plain old cross breeds. Our rescue centers are full of them

I'm sure they make lovely dogs but surely when breeding dogs factors such as temperament, health etc should be taken into consideration rather than how "fashionable or cool" the name of the cross breed sounds...!

Examples from above website includes: Jack-a-poo (Jack russel and poodle) and Cockapoo (cocker spaniel and poodle)........
 
I suppose you could argue that almost every pedigree breed of dog is a crossbreed somehow or other. I'm certainly not condoning breeding 'fashionable' dogs but the reason the world has such a variety of dogs is due to crossbreeding different dogs to achieve a desired look or trait. Unfortunately whilst ever their is a demand for new and unusual first crosses there will be breeders willing to supply.
 
i have a yorkelier - cavalier cross yorkie or by any other name a......mutt.

he was an accident - a happy one for us as we wanted either a yorkie or a cavalier but in all honesty couldn't actually afford either and cross breeds are cheaper, in general. i think giving them names like Yorkelier - which isn't on that list - is actually a form of snobbery (MO). it's much nicer to say i have a yorkelier rather than i have a cav cross yorkie mongrel

I havn't personally got one of these dogs. But i do groom a Cockerpoo that is a regular client of mine.
I do agree with what has been posted above, that other things should be taken into concideration when breeding rather than how fashionable the dog is.

Sorry but the majority of them all look the same to me......all look like scruffy, shaggy dogs that you'd pay 50 quid from a rescue centre.

In the US, at least, hybrids are the preserve of puppy mills. The dogs get shipped from barns in the midwest and are sold -- get this -- for $1500 in NYC pet stores. The most popular ones I've come across have been Puggles (Beagle/Pug), Bugs (Boston Terrier/Pug) and any number of poodle mixes that always seem to have terrible tearing issues.

I read this article yesterday and am pleased to report that shelters are getting in on the cutesy naming act.
 
I think the lady in the article above says it all really

Whatever you choose, and whatever you call it, the dog will be just as unique and special as a pricier pup.

It doesn't really matter whether I call Dandy a yorelier , a crossbreed, a mutt or a mongrel. He's my dog and I love him what ever.
 
I have a jack russell cross border collie, when people ask what breed he is i tell them his a jackollie just seeing if it catches on, I couldnt care less what he is i love him even when he does chew my shoes.
 
i have a yorkiepoo. (yorkiexpoodle) he is 15 years old as is the most adorable little rat you could ever find
 
I met a man recently who's dog looked like a lurchery/foxoundy type thing, not unattractive but nothing special. When I said 'oooh I love lurchers' he sniffed, scowled and said 'it's not a lucher, it's a rough coated poodle and it's taken me years to get it right'. Speechless on so many levels! ie How many litters did he breed to come up with this nonentity, why would anyone want a dog that looks like that and what was the point anyway!
