Having just looked at photos of me doing dressage on Sunday I want to change the correct riding attire of large ladies.

My first suggestion is that we do away with tight white or pale cream jodphurs that do so much to show off thunder thighs and go for a dark, boot cut trouser, possibly with a small stripe down the side.

My other issues are with the saucepan hat, the jacket with a fat bottom escape vent at the back, collar and tie or stock (I'm not a man), hairnet, and long leather boots. Can anyone suggest any improvements on these.

I know the real answer would be to go on a super slimming diet so that I look good in these clothes, but its just not going to happen, so I have decided its the equestrian world that must change!

I'd be happy to do away with the white/cream jodphurs, simply for practicality reasons.
I think a shirt with a v-neck jumper would be fine. I always feel horribly restricted in a show jacket. And for God's sake, let me take the bloody thing of if it's 30C. Cheers.

I don't have problems getting clothing to fit - I just look absolutly hideous in them! I want the rules on what you are allowed to wear to change!

Yes - a nice thick jacket with shirt and tie in the middle of July does feel fairly silly. I would put up with a shirt if I didn't have to wear a tie or stock.....
 
Yes...... possibly - men's jods are baggier but I still want black or brown - I can remember when I was little having to wear hand me down jods that had huge wings on the hips so I suppose I should be glad that they have gone of the required list
 
I have to say I am saving up for a nice black or navy jacket but HAVE to have one with the seam around the waist and the longer length - they look much more elegant if you are a little 'squishy' around the waist and hip area
 
Thats what has really annoyed me - I need a tweed jacket so I persuaded OH that I needed a nicely cut one rather than the really hideous one I had - it looks better but not as better as I want it to!

OMG somebody PLEASE get the powers that be get with the plot re: competition clothing, get Trinny and Suzannah on the case!

Beige or white jod's don't help anyone but Twiggy, I'm a size 12 but still feel like a blimp in them. Trouble is I don't like to see dark ones either except with a uniform and then preferably with a nice soldier filling them

Why can't someone invent 'magic' breeches to hide the lumps?

As for a shirt with collar and tie, they may well be correct for showing but make me look/feel butch

I think a short sleeved shirt in summer would be sufficient. As for ties/stocks - if I had to wear one, I'd prefer a stock, mainly because I am on the small side and wearing a tie makes me look like I've just escaped from the local boarding school.

White jodphurs are much like white underwear - you wear them for years before it eventually dawns on you that:

a) There really are other colours out there
b) They won't remain white, even if you're one of those who actually separates their whites
c) Your mother no longer buys your clothes

I really think making women wear a collar and tie is strange - I always feel like Miss Trunchball from Matilda (Roald Dahl)

I have managed to avoid white breeches or jods thank goodness - I only do very local stuff so white jods are not a must

So - dark boot cut jods, an open neck shirt (short sleeved for summer) and a jumper if you are cold.....

any other ideas for replacing the hairnet, boots and hat?
 
I like the way that showing is going. The dark corn breeches are much more flattering than the beige ones. They made my legs look like lengths of porridge.

Why do the buttons on a jacket finish so high? I have put a fastener where a 4th button would be to stop that horrible bit where the shirt meets the breeches being on display. Much neater.

The thing about the hairnet, boots and hat, is that they have a safety function. OR - Go Western!

I have bought some dark biscuit coloured jods that I am going to wear at competitions. I discoverd to my horror the other day that I had not got round to buttoning the bottom button of my shirt (VERY late) so I must have been showing a nice bare midriff at some points

Buy yourself some paint and a Superman or Spider-man comic, now re-create the lines on either Supes or Spideys thighs on your jods

Problem solved

And as a bonus, no one will attempt to spill your pint...

You should worry - I do actually look like Miss Trunchbull in my jodhs, never mind feeling like her. I think I must be the same build as Pam Ferris, as there are alarming similarities. When I am togged up in my full show gear, its even worse, more like some kind of guard from the Gulag Archipelago...

I would love to wear dark navy jodhs to match my jacket, instead of beige ones.
