Despair, help PLEASE. Horse and pills

Poor you! :(

Agree with others about not 'contaminating' her feed with them, so maybe try to get into a routine of giving her the pill/reward separately. My old loan pony has recently started on medication for cushings and the vet advised us to pop the pill up in his cheek pouch at the side so there is no option of him not taking it, and then shoving a carrot in his mouth for good measure/as a reward.

This might not work for you straightaway as you'd need to get her over her phobia of carrots/treats and you may need to coat/cover the tablet in something before putting it up into her cheek, but worth a go?

Good luck, hope you get her sorted! :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, it really is appreciated. And its nice to know I'm not alone in the problem. She has been on them for about a year now and its just got progressively harder as my ingenuity has been stretched to the limits. Most things seem to work for a week and then no more, but of course she's now got so suspicious of new 'treats' she'd prefer to just say No.

I've bought some peanut butter today and am going to try that (without pills) this evening.

Then I'll try shoving them in her cheek pouch and see what happens with that one, followed by a treat if she'll take it

If that's not a goer I'm going to try mixing with icing sugar to a runny gloop and syringing that

And finally if all the above fail I'll talk to the vet about the suspension version, although her violent reaction to syringing doesn't fill me with hope. She's ok to worm, disapproving but accepts it. Although I haven't tried to worm her since I started syringing the damn pills so may not be so easy next time!

Hello their if you put some water and black treacle in a mix put your pills in the syringe and pour some of the mix in to the syringe let the tablets dissolve and feed her some treacle first so she knows its nice and sweet, put the syringe in to the corner of her mouth, I had to do this with my cushings mare I had to have her PTS due to lami Good luck

My mare might just be an exception but could you try hand feeding it with a tiny bit of feed. I've been through what your doing trying to mask it but mare just ignored feed it. Also tried sringe into her mouth she freaked (hates people grabbing her head). Now she eats it plain out of my hand, I give it at night to make sure its gone down

Dont tell the vet, ours will only eat it in a mini mars bar. Itsa real pain to get it down him he hates it! The sugar free polo worked for a while, so did a tiny bit of cake.

I always used to give my old horse his tablets in a black treacle sandwich. Don't know if I was lucky or not but never had any problems giving them to his this way.
Best of luck.

Is she the jealous type? Do you have a horse you could 'park up' next to her and feed sweeties to? Plain ones for them and doctored ones for her? Just don't mix them up!

My incredibly fussy horse absolutely scoffed down antibiotic powder mixed in Good Doer, and there was me thinking "this'll never work"!
