Who do people turn to when they can't keep their horse anymore ?? my lovely horse has been advertised for weeks and I've had hardly any interest and those that have been to view are not honest about their ability to ride. I'm due to go into hospital at the end of the month and I have nobody to help me. People at the yard don't want to know, some days I've so ill and had to drag myself to the stables in the evening to find the place in darkness and everyone has gone home and not even bothered to check if me or my horse are okay.

I've even tried to give her away to a good home but there are no takers, even dealers are not buying and I've tried horse welfare charities. I am not in good health and I'm struggling and the welfare of my horse is my biggest priority but its proving very difficult. I'm not the type of person to abandon at livery but I can now honestly understand the desparation of some people in these situations.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, but please no negative feedback, it won't help.

Thank you.

You poor poor thing. I cant imagine how it is for you. Have you put adverts in the local tack shops? What does your yard owner say? can they hep at all? Do they know how desperate things are?

If she is a safe ride, how about a riding school? They may take her on free loan and if your health allows you can then take her back.

best of luck.

What a dreadful situation to be in. Would you be able to afford full livery at least in the short term? Or pay someone to cover the daily care of your horse (I'm presuming this might be a little cheaper than full livery).

Failing that you could try advertising on Facebook as you may find someone desperate to be around horses again who'd be happy to help out.

Sorry I can't offer more help or advise. Whereabouts in the country are you?

I can't afford full livery, I'm struggling to pay DIY as I now can't work due to my health and I'm already behind with my rent. I've already tried one riding school but they won't take mares. I've got another to try today.

Sorry to read of your sad situation. Have you thought of or tried to loan out your horse? Have you considered the 'project horse' website? That is generally for cheap horses/ponies which may have a quirk or a schooling issue and could be taken on and turned around by someone for themselves or to resell.
The other thing to consider is retirement livery for the winter if you are going to be unable to look after your horse. That could be the cheapest option if you cannot sell or loan. Good luck op - this situation must be very stressful for you, but I suggest write down all the options/avenues you have and pursue them - maybe several at once to keep your options open and hopefully a positive outcome.

Shame on the people at your yard that they aren't offering to help out temporarily.

Are you advertising for sale, loan or share?

Whereabouts in the country are you? Maybe someone can suggest something locally for you.

I hope you manage to find a good solution so that you can then concentrate on your own health.

It's hard to know what to suggest without knowing details of the horse: age, height, health, temperament etc as riding schools and equine colleges may not be appropriate depending on the details of the horse. If the horse is in good health and over 14hh an equine college might be interested and they do sometimes take horses that aren't novice rides. Riding schools might take smaller but then would probably want a quiet, easy horse.

As suggested above if you put an advert on H&H then link it to this thread people might have some more suggestions.

Only other thought is would your horse be happy at grass livery as this would take some of the pressure off you and would be cheaper than DIY.

The people at your yard may not be offereing to help, but have you actually asked them outright for some assisstance? i.e I need someone to do pony every day in the evening, can you please do him for me? It may just be that they dont know how dire things are for you?

Sorry to hear about your situation, I can't imagine how difficult it is for you.

Can you tell us where abouts in the country you are and the details of your horse?

May be give us details of your horse so we can help look for new homes.

Other than that pay for livery.
Even if you just turn your horse away and pay soneone to check and feed it etc.

Unfortunately, I can't put too many details on here, the post will be deleted !!! People at the yard know I'm struggling, but I'm too proud to ask for help, I am doing my best for her at the moment. I have a friend who helps me twice a week. She's a lovely genuine pony and a safe fun ride but she is mid teens which I think its putting buyers off. I'm absolutely broke one of the other reasons I need to sell of find a good home. Paying for full livery or help isn't an option.

Give us the bare min then:
Location
Height
Any probs
Someone on here may be able to help - but as mentioned, location is a good starter xx

There could be companion homes (free) to tie you over whilst you are in hospital as long as you get a proper written agreement that she can come back to you, or sell her from there. I have sent pm.

Then I am sorry, but you need to forget your pride and think of the welfare of your horse!! people are not going to offer their time on a plate, you have got to ask!!!

Exactly.

So, you have a couple of choices. Ask for help and see where that gets you. Put some more information up here to see if anyone here can help. Have the horse put down.

Agree with Benson21 here. You say you're desperate so I think now is the time to swallow your pride and ask for help at least in the short-term. I know if you were on my yard I'd happily help out and I'm sure others would too, but they won't know how bad things have got unless you tell them.

I do completely agree with benson21 and amymay. But you cant help those that are not willing to help themselves.

People on her are trying to help - please post some more details or pm someone that has replied to your post

I'm not trying to sound harsh - but if you aren't willing to give any more info. Then I may think you are making it up :(

I believe Reaseheath college in Cheshire are currently looking for horses, they just have to be a reasonable all rounder to be used on their courses.

I don't understand why OP can't post information about the horse and it's location. Someone may be able to help. I thought that was the whole point of the post.
