My mare is currently on box rest due to her first ever case of laminitis. Vet wants her in for 3 weeks, we're currently half way through and to be honest I'm almost as depressed as her now!
She's not a fan of being in, quite happy if it's part of her routine but 24 hours is a definite no no. I was double netting her hay as she's on a strict diet and the first problem was her eating out too quick. This has lead to a little bit of box walking, wood chewing (stopped that quickly with a quick application of some yucky stuff!), pretty much constant weaving when she's done eating (been getting people to have her door open as she has a chain, when they're about on the yard) she's weaved so much she's rubbed the hair away on the underside of her neck :( I've now hopefully solved that by covering the end of the door with some foam, and now to top it off for the past 2 days she's not eating up :( at a loss at what to do. Spoke to the vet this morning who is going to give me some sedaline sp* and said we have 2 options keep her in or create a pen outside but I don't want her out yet as she still has some heat in one hoof which vet agrees with, but the weaving isn't going to be helping matters down there either. Has anyone got any bright ideas?? I hate seeing her like this its horrible :( she can't have any licks or treats due to the laminitis :(:(

I'd try her outside. She's not doing herself any good if she's weaving all the time while in. Can she see other horses?

I would really try and get her in a small pen outside, the weaving is not going to do her any good and she is just going to be getting herself stressed which is not going to help her get over the Laminitis. The weaving however small is going to put more stress through her feet than if she is mooching round a little pen.

I would give a small pen a try and see how she takes to it. I made one for mine with deep wood chips to support his feet and he was much calmer and happier in there even though it wasn't much bigger than his stable.

Have you thought about feeding Magnesium Oxide? It may help with calming and it is thought to be beneficial for laminitics - though this has not yet been scientifically proven. You can get it here without a fancy price tag: MAGNESIUM OXIDE 900g 99.7 Mag Ox Calmer Laminitis Hoof ...

Oh cr@p! Silly phone wouldn't copy the page link so I googled it and pasted that. Sorry - just try googling 'Progressive earth mag ox' yourself and you'll get there.
Mag ox helped my mare adjust to box rest of 3 months. It is the main ingredient in expensive calmers and this is one of the cheapest ways to buy it. No frills.
I have just ordered some more because now that she is out on pen turnout, there are more things to wind her up. I do sympathize. Hope you can get her settled.

Thanks for that now about to order some for her! Will have to borrow someones horse to eat down an area for a pen as there is just so much grass at the yard I'm on and ironically there's not enough horses to eat it down!
