Can anyone recommend a mac for my boy that is really breathable? He is a cob with a thick coat and tho partly clipped is suffering in this mild but wet weather. I realise i could just leave the mac off, but then it rains .......... With the mac on he ends up with a curly wet coat! Going to tack shop in an hour ".........

The king of LW tunouts, is without doubt, the Bucas Smartex Rain.

Your cob would probably need the big-neck version as the standard neck fits my fine-build neds perfectly. I have tried so many makes (Horseware, Shires, Weatherbeeta etc...) and it is worth the money, although I have been lucky and never needed to pay full price as I got one in the Rideaway sale (years ago, it still looks new after it's been washed by the rain and is properly waterproof) and two on ebay.

Can't rate the Amigos highly enough but you must make sure you get the 1200 denier lightweight as the 600 denier is not waterproof. My con x tb is still in his lightweight at the moment and he stays very dry in his rug but I do put a neck cover on as well.

good breathable rugs .. amigo, rambo, fal. if he is a part clipped hairy cob he will be too hot even in a breathable rug. so either increase your clip, or leave naked. just clipped the shetland for the 4th time (hunter clip) this year as he is too hot and is grumpy and itchy cos he is too hot! and he never wears a rug!!! the temps for nov in horse terms are positively tropical!!! as usual the decreased daylight has induced vast coats not required for these temperatures. horses hate being too hot.

I have a Bucas Sun Shower sheet for my hot boy. Mesh lined, silver colour to reflect heat and it has not leaked unlike a number of cheap light weight turnouts I could mention, ahem Amigo.......

Hi all - didn't have a lot of choice when i got to the local tack shop, but picked up a Weatherbeeta - if i find that 'breathable' works for him then i'll look around at all your really useful suggestions. I agree that a solution could be just go naked, but we get a lot of mist and fog early mornings, so it's very damp, and of course with a thick coat he gets very wet if it rains. (yes, i know, 'real' horses go naked all the time!!!). Thanks for all your answers - i love this forum!
