desperate help wanted

can any one help me. my 19 yr old retired tb has started fence walking, happy to go out but only till 1-2 pm then starts pacing up and down. out with 2 others. real pain as coming in sweating everyday, today left him out and bought others in. -just out of frustration. has hay out there and grass is growing. fine once in. please can anyone advise. may consider keeping him in and turning others out but this will also stress him out. feeling really fed up with this. please can anyone help?
 
My horse did the same and it was feed related. This was even proven when he started living out and I fed him in the shelter once a day and he fence walked and charged round once he anticipated feeding time. I stopped the hard feed and fed him 24/7 more hay (mixed with a little haylage) in nets in the shelter and he calmed right down.
Make coming inside boring - do not give him a bucket feed for a couple of hours, just ignore him. He is excited as anticipating bucket feed or something he wants. Try perhaps to bring him in before he gets excited and charges around. You should find he will want to stay out longer when coming in is "boring". Good luck.
 
My 18yo tb boy Ted, will only go out for around 20 mins - 1 hour in winter, otherwise he simply has a breakdown and screams, weaves at the gate, charges round, getting very worked up. We have tried hay and carrots( he is very greedy) but this doesn't help. He has got progressively worse as he's got older. He was a very talented show hunter pony and got little turnout when with his previous owner, he also got brought in if it rained! He is currently turned out with my sisters 10yo dwb Toby, who just caries on grazing as if nothing is going on. In summer he will stay out all night without difficulty.

He is far worse if he see's me, it's really heart breaking! We decided that it was easier to bring him and Toby in after I'd finished mucking out, as he will just about tolerate going out for that long- he can't cope though if Toby stays out and he is in. Also, Toby was more than happy to come in and have his hay in his stable. It didn't seem worth the stress/injury that Ted was likely to cause himself in the mud bath he had created at the gate.

Ted is now very happy and started to go out for 1 hour, which gives me just enough time to muck out and walk the dogs. They then get to stretch their legs on the yard when I muck out in the evening after work.

Ted is happy staying in the enclosed yard with Toby and will spend a hours at the weekend ambling about, but they have to be supervised as Toby destroys items and climbs the muck heap. It might be due to a security thin,g as Ted is happy provided he can get to his stable when he needs to.

Is there any way that you can allow him access to both the stable and field at the same time?

Are there any other horses that are also stabled that can keep him company if the other 2 can't come in.
