Desperately seeking help!!

If she was ours and couldnt be rehomed amongst other family or local farmers she would have been kept as a family pet in fact mother and father-I-L had Sally when I first met my husband. Sally was terrified of cattle even though she came from good working stock but was nervous and like your f-I-ls dog the minute she saw cattle she would head for home.

Have you contacted any of the sites that people have given? apart from the RSPCA.

I was told by a friend who works for rescue, who I approached about help for a private rehome, that nobody was looking for a dog like ours :(
Hopefully some of those forums linked can help.

unfortunatly when you have 6 dogs keeping "passengers" is not an option they all have to play a part in the farm, they can't afford vets bills etc for something that is not going to work for it's living. There is already a pet dog which belongs to my OH’s sister a JRT which also works (helping round up the sheep and driving them up the roads).

So without reading back (sorry) im making tea:p she is ok to go as a family pet? ok with other dogs? ok off lead? and has no collie stalking tendancies lol:D friendly?
I would hazard a guess she is not neutered? is she vaccinated? chipped?

Yes she likes people but can be a little funny with other dogs, ie someone brought their dog over to meet her the other day and she did snap at him but to be fair he was a new dog on her territory, but she is kept with 5 other dogs with no problems.

She is ok off the lead will come to call ok but only been on the lead as a small puppy so not happy with being on a lead but with time and training that may improve.

No she is not neutered as the plan was work her then to put her the the best working dog to improve the bloodlines (she does good bloodlines) however now not suitable. Not chipped and i'm not sure about vaccinated but she is upto date with worming.

I am happy to place her on our site for you as a private rehome? I could not agree to asking £150 for her as we actually charge this as a donation for a vaxed, neutered, chipped, wormed and de flead and insured dog that has been assessed.
But I could certainly place her on with a picture and a description. If you then wanted to ask a charge when speaking to interested parties then fair enough but I just could not put that on the site.

Ps, we do reach a large audience despite the fact we are in Durham, I have succesfully rehome dogs the other side of the country when they have spotted a dog on our site.

i don't think they will pay £150 to cover the costs. can i just ask you a question how would you assess her from the other side of the country

Just spoke to a friend whos friend just had her collie bitch pts (was very old). She lives in Essex but her son is in Cornwall, am waiting to see if they are interested.

You misunderstood, I could not asses her as she would be a"private rehome", my comparison was we charge a donation of £150 for a fully assessed, neutered, vaxed, chipped dog, so the price you wanted for her would have to be discussed when the interested party contacted you and not mentioned on the site.

You have some interest here so hopefuly you can find her a good home but if you want to place her on our rehoming site you can.

Well i just thought id update everybody that Fern went off to a new home today. Thank you to everybody who offered any help or ideas.

She has gone of to live with a family on the other side of Dartmoor who spend alot of time walking on the moors.

I did have a lady from a rescue place phone me back but to be honest i had spoken to so many people i forget who it was.

I have to say though i was unimpressed with her manner on the phone, telling me that we are heartless and that we should be ashamed of ourselves. she was going to send somebody there to pick up the dog and we would have to donate the money for having her
spayed.

I understand that yes it is harsh to be rehoming a dog because it wont work but that dog needs to be replaced with one that will work. If you kept all the dogs that wont work as pets there would be no room for the working dogs and the expense of keeping all these pets when your trying to run a business. It was not a decision that was taken lightly and the putting to sleep was the last resort.

The Lady that has Taken Fern found the advert in the local feed merchants and contacted us.

I am so glad Fern has found a lovely home but I have to agree with the lady from the rescue. When you get the amount of dogs dumped in rescue I can see where she is coming from.

Farming is a business I know that but I still think your OH father is rather hard hearted, no disrespect to you OP I know you have tried your best for this dog.

I'm glad Fern found a new home. Hopefully they will value her more than her last home, who could well be described as heartless really, and probably should have contributed to her spaying..

I live in a sheep farming area, and many of my friends farm sheep. Many of them have dogs that didn't work out as herding dogs still hanging around the house and farm quite happily. They don't cost that much to keep!

Except when you have been trying to rehome for 12months and if you keep all the dogs that dont want to work for a living then you have no room for the workers. Its not just about money its time and space aswell.

Also Ive just noticed this dog is 16months old and you have been trying to find her a home for a year that would put her at 4months old, so how much training is a 4month collie given, sorry it dosnt add up for me but can take heart in that she has found a good home.

Burness explained that before - try reading the whole thread before casting judgement.

It is also not her dog, she was just trying to do the right thing!

Anyway the dog now has a home, so all good, lets be happy and have a Merry Christmas :)

Do you have a lot of dogs then that dont make the grade as workers? I thought we were only talking about one dog.

No but we only have space for 6 dogs and we need to have at least 4 working dogs at any one time which leave space for one training space and one space for the JRT who belongs to the SIL (who also helps driving and rounding up the sheep- she thinks she is a collie).

Also as I explained before a dog has to show interest to enable to be trained to work. Fern was not interested at all.

Thank you

And Thank you Amymay

I'm so glad.
I would rehome (sell) a horse that wouldn't hunt, so why not a dog?

I think it was the fact that the dog was facing a bullet if not re-homed that was concerning - not the fact that they wanted to re-home it. Nothing wrong with that at all.

If you had been trying to rehome a horse and only 1 person in 12 months show any interest even when offered Free to a good hoome, But you needed the horse to go then what would you do with the horse - Potters?
