Just a quickie - had a call from the yard this afternoon to say Rocco was legging it round the field with his rug over his head. YO went out to fetch him in as I set off. She'd managed to get him in when I arrived - I think he was quite pleased someone came to rescue him! Anyhow, the rug in question is a Buster Tri - neck rug and one liner inside. It was all fitted together correctly - good size (if anything a little small rather than big). Yesterday he'd managed to break one of the belly straps - presumably got a leg in it even though both straps are as tight as they will go round his middle. Nevermind I put an old surcingle round to keep the rug steady with only one belly strap and tucked the broken end out of the way.

Today he's managed to get the bum parts over his head. He's then stood on the bum part of the liner and bend one of the clips which attaches the liner to the outer rug. The liner is ripped right through. He then somehow got one of his front legs through the neck hole of the liner (not the outer rug) and consequently has ripped the top chest strap off the liner rug.

Bearing in mind, Rocco isn't some kind of strange contortionist. Sure he likes to buck and play in the field but he doesn't do anything that weird. Should I be annoyed that a rug I've had maximum of 2 weeks is now missing a belly strap for the outer rug and the one liner is trashed. The liner was correctly attached the outer rug and remained that way other than one clip where he'd stood on the back end of the rug.

Any thoughts? Anyone else had similar experiences?

When you say it was done up as tight as possible (belly straps), is that as tight as they would go in terms of strap length, or were they touching his tummy?

I ask because when my girl went to the vet, the belly straps on her (brand new) stable rug were a little on the long side. She apparently put a leg through and tore it. She had worn it before and not had any problem. The vet said it was my fault because the straps were too long (even though the vet had spare rugs, etc., but that's a diferent rant

Don't even bother phoning them.
I have a PE Winterbuster (with the detachable neck) and after my horse (a genteel soul) wearing it for about 6 weeks in total, it started to disintegrate, with the velcro bits falling off.
I phoned them up and they were aggressively unhelpful.

As tight as the straps would allow. To be fair I'm not over concerned about the belly strap - I can get it repaired. It's more just the fact that he managed to get the back of the rug over his head and his leg out the front despite the front portion of the rug having stayed relatively straight due to the surcingle I used.

Does the rug have a fillet string or leg straps? If not then the rug is bound to flip over his bum. I personally think they are crap rugs, as foxy says, you get what you pay for. Having said that i dont think you canblame the rug if the horse treads on it/gets leg in belly strap. If it hadnt broken you would have a very lame horse! Just one of those things, just annoying its a ne rug!

I said the same last night after fishing the broken bit of belly strap out of the field. "In fairness the rugs should snap if they get stuck". I just planned to get it restitched when i send the rug for cleaning. It only has a fillet strap - same as all his other rugs. My only concern looking at the rug tonight is that the fillet strap is quite low - almost level with the 'soft' part of his tail. The rug hangs quite deep round him but he certainly isn't the sort of horse you would describe as petite and thus expect him to be drowned by a rug.

I think it's just one of those things...

I have a couple of their liners & a clip has already broken (in my hand!)
I phoned them & they sent me a new clip of a different design. Will still have to pay to have it stitched on professionally though. They are almost identical to the Rambo Duo, at least the liners are & I think they're good rugs.

Its a real shame because when these rugs first came out they were very good and reasonably priced.

Now they seem to fall to bits very easily and have become expensive for what they are and the customer service is dreadful!

Maybe they will make some changes after people vote with their feet.

Shame.

I think i would ring them you dont know if you dont ask !!

Ive got a PE rug from at least 4 winters ago and its doing fine Ive so far not had any problems and brought various other PE rugs since

i don't agree with the 'you get what you pay for' comment they are good quality rugs and have certainly out lasted a weatherbeeta equivalent.
and comparing the heavyweight winter rug with its Rambo equivalent its certainly a better fit ( for my horse)

i cant comment on the new rugs maybe they are using new methods for thier manufacturers to make them that would account for any quality issues.

has anyone noticed in the new catalogue there seems to be an obsession with boots !!!

Considering the reception one poster had when she rang them over a delivery issue, I'd say I'd rather shoot myself in the face with a sawn-off than call PE for anything.

I think you're stuffed as fitted the rug with a broken surcingle (even though you added your own), they will possibly rightly claim it wasn't fitted corrrectly.

Does he usually do this to rugs.
I wouldn't say PE were the best made rugs on the market after recent experiences and I aslo don't think they breathe very well but also maybe consider that a rug with a liner in these spring temps - maybe he was just hot!

No he hasn't trashed his Amigo rainsheet which he's worn all winter.

Unfortunately I have to rug him at the moment as he's bald....don't ask!!!!

No really, he is totally bald. Had a virus a few weeks ago which has caused him to get a rainscald-type reaction all over his body. It's a difficult one really - without a rug he's frozen but then I don't know if putting one on is irritating him. And if I turn him out without he'll roll and get his skin covered in mud but he's being a little over-sensitive about being groomed as it's just bare skin - no hair at all. Anyone got any good ideas?

To be honest he's probably just trashed it. Just one of those things as someone said above. I can replace the liner or maybe even patch it up and guess I'll have to get the sewing kit out for the outer rug as well.

Horrid little monster!! But delightful all the same.

If the amigo rain sheet lasted all winter why not get an amigo heavy weight or medium weight of the same denier and then you know they'll fit. Hope this helps.

I'm another bod who had a problem with a PE rug a while back. And found their customer service appalling. And non-existent. Quick to take your money, nowhere to be seen in the even of an issue.

Sounds like Amigo's would be a better route to take.

Hope your horse has recovered from the virus he had soon.

hiya

my rug broke the belly strap on the first wear after only wearing about half an hour. I suspect she had rolled once as there was limited mud! I did manage to ring and get another belly strap sent but it took 9 months, several phone calls and was sewn on at my expense. I suspect they will blame you for the major damage as you should not have really turned back out with one strap broke i suppose!

Saying that my broodmare has been turned out in one all winter, its taken a right hammering and is absolutely fine.

My old hunter always had itchy skin - he developed a hideous rash when we lent him to a neighbour and they put one of their own rugs on him.
He would barely tolerate a rug, even when clipped, and we ended up using a single heavy Shires stable rug (with leg straps so he couldn't crawl out of it) and a Rambo excel turnout. Both were fairly 'loose' fitting and had nylon linings so didn't irritate him - suspect your chap has got so itchy he just had to get out of the rug somehow!

I bought a Winter Buster at the beginning of the winter off them and the velco of the hood started coming away as soon as he wore it. I rang them and they sent me a new hood and let me keep the old one. The rug has been fab all winter and my horse, despite being the most efficient roller ever, hasn't managed to break it yet. I know others have had trouble with them but I think they are pretty good.
