I bought a new landa medium lite to rug this week, nice. Bought a horseware lite rug a couple of weeks ago. nice. Prices reasonable. BUT I am now looking for a detachable neck cover for the Landa and cannot believe they are half the price of the actual rug???? How can this be??? Is it me being tight (I hope not, he gets pretty much what he needs) or is charging half the price for a millionth of the material a con? Rant over :(

Not at all, I noticed how much they were too!
I've decided to stick to combo rugs from now on :/ I can barely afford rugs as it is without buying seperate necks for them aswell.

I agree though, it's insane.

Totally agree..they are so expensive!! I've just bought a Masta Zing MW T/O, was planning to get the neck to match to discover that they now no longer do the neck rug in the red & navy that I bought it in (it now only comes in Cherry & check) so I've now got to get a neck rug that doesn't match the rug!! Been trying to get a plain red or navy one which hasn't been easy. I did find today though that Rhinegold do a universal neck cover that fits all rugs which could be quite handy? The other site to try in preloved.co.uk, you can normally find a few people who have brought neck rugs, tried them on their horses & then sell them on because they don't fit.

neck rugs are really expensive i agree. I bought a cheap(er) medium masta neck rug, my horses take a small... but masta have d-rings on the binding, and the rugs i use now have d-rings set back so the masta fits on there :D they are hard to come by too :-\
I like the ruggles, and IV horse rugs - they come with neck rugs at a reasonable price :)

Thumbs up for the Rhinegold universal neck covers - mine is on its 3rd winter and still going strong, fits Weatherbeetas really well, don't know about other makes. I got mine from ebay. Doesn't seem to rub manes either. I think I paid about £20 for it.

re the universal neck cover, what weight do you reckon they are roughly? I wanted a MW? If you reckon it's pretty good I think I'll get one.

There is a reason I buy combo rugs!! Whilst I see how useful it is to be able to take the neck off, I just can't justify the extra expense, particularly when a combo is less likely to leak anyway.

I would guess at MW, they do have some filling, but not as thick as my heavyweight Orican.

Does blow back in the wind a bit, but doesn't seem to rub the mane - I don't like joined up combos as they seem to be dreadful for rubbing the mane out.

Ditto, ditto. I bought a new rug in a sale and have decided that it needs a neck cover as well and was shocked at the price. I found one for sale on ebay, from a shop, which was a discounted price, but it has still made for an expensive rug. Won't do that again.!
At least the new rug is waterproof and doesn't rub, which was the problem with the other two Ihave!

mmm...think I'll be ordering one of the universal ones then.. I don't like combos for the main rubbing. I've got a HW combo as if it's cold enough for a HW then it's cold enough for the neck piece but with a MW definately need detachable necks!! I've also seen the Loveson Allpro neck piece in my local saddlery, they're about £15 which is pretty good!

I have two weatherbeeta detachable necks in grey that im looking to sell. Think there a meduim weight and either cob or full size i can double check if anyones interested in them pm me. One slightly used and one brand new.

I can't believe how backward some things here are. Have spent a good deal of my life in NZ where 90% of rugs come with detatchable neck rugs. Therefore there is no issue! In a country where it's freezing in the winter (UK), surely it makes sense to have rugs with neck rugs?? If they're detatchable you have the option to remove them if it's warmer or if your horses mane is getting rubbed out. That's the only bummer about neck rugs; come spring when you want to plait for your first competition of the season, you find next to no mane. That's the only downside I reckon. Warm horse, less mud plastering surface - we shouldn't have to pay extra for that!
