I would like to give my horse a detox but I am unsure what to use. The reason I would like to try is that he is a headshaker and would like to try a detox to see if it would help him fight his allergy. Has anyone tried a detox and what product did you use?
 
That's what his kidneys and alimentary canal are for. Just keep supporting his immune system with correct feeding and management and he can do the rest himself. Human detox stuff detoxes the imagination mostly, as stated in the scientific press fairly recently.

It is always worth giving a horse a detox. Mine get one twice a year along with , at any time they are wormed or have an antibiotic or I feel they need one.

You do not need to ask your vet.

Another thing you can try is a nose net that may help his head shaking.

Paulineh - Unfortunately he won't wear a nose net.

The reason I am asking about detox is that a friend had a herbalist out to her horse who also headshakes. He said that a detox would be good as it helps the body get rid of all the nasties and it can therefore concentrate on helping fight the allergies. I am not prepared to have a consultation for £50 to be told what the vet has already confirmed, that he has a pollen allergy, so I thought I would cut out the middle man and just find a detox product. My friends horse is currently on detox herbs and she is undecided if it is helping, but I thought it must be worth a try with my boy!! Thanks again for your responses, I think I need to look into this more!
 
I am giving my horse fresh detox herbs daily. She is on week 10 boxrest with stress laminitis.

I pick the following for her and she wolfs them down :) :

Netlle tops
cleavers
Hawthorn tips
Dandelion with the whole root

I offer a bucketful everyday and she eats the lot. Around 5 or 6 dandelion plants loads of cleavers amd the rest made up of the Hathorn and nettles.
You could also try aromatherapy oils; I use those also. i am an aromatherapist and I have referred to Caroline Ingraham's aromatherapy suggestions for horses. She does a very cheap Eyewitness starter book. The oils are cheap enough and i swear by them.

Oh for gods sake. Herbal = magical, mystical properties? Deadly Nightshade is herbal. So is ragwort. As long as a horse is managed and fed correctly his own kidneys filter out waste and unwanted products from his blood. Save your money guys.
 
charcoal will help flush out toxins from the gut - It is used by vets and doctors for poisonings. (Try Equus Health Gastro-Kalm)
...and don't forget, plenty of today's medicines have originated from natural / herbal plant extracts.
