Just fell in the Grade 2 Coral Ascot Hurdle, at the second fence. He's not up yet...... Some ofyou may remember what a fantastic season he had last year, even if his form did peter out towards the end of the season and he didn't do well at Cheltenham. I foaled this horse and he was one of my favourites - really hope Baby Vic (what I called him - dam is called Seattle Victory) is OK!!

oh no!

Didn't look good at all - if he'd just been winded, he would have been more still.

Darn it i wish i could watch the racing whilst at work!

! poor boy, i guess if he was kicking whilst down it could be either back or neck....

Oh no. Looking for news now.

One of my favourites, so I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed.

He's my favourite NH horse - never foaled an NH horse before! All been fflat racers. He didn't seem to be moving his right fore leg - he was down on his right side....

Racing Post says it was fatal. So so sorry. Another one of our beautiful boys lost. I hope he'll keep Granit Jack company up there.

The report on the racing post says that Detroit City had a post mortem which showed that he had a ruptured valve in his heart which caused the death.

RIP Detroit City. Been wondering where he had been.
Truely devastated for the owner first Rooster Booster now Detroit Cityx

Taken from the Racing Post.

"RACING suffered the grievous loss on Saturday of one its star players in Detroit City, the grey whose popularity embraced both codes after a glorious unbroken sequence of wins in 2006 included a Cesarewitch and a Triumph Hurdle.

The five-year-old died instantly of a suspected broken neck in a fall at the second flight in the Coral Ascot Hurdle, in which he was making his seasonal debut. His passing marked another grim weekend following the high profile death of Granit Jack, also a five-year-old, in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

A winner of a dozen of his 20 starts, and more than £420,000, Detroit City had proved a perfect replacement for 2003 champion hurdler Rooster Booster, another grey owned by Terry Warner and trained by Philip Hobbs.

Rooster Boster died on the gallops in 2005 at the age of 11.

After Saturday's sad incident, Richard Johnson, who had ridden Detroit City in all but one of his ten races over jumps, was too upset to speak beyond stating: “It's very disappointing.”

The loss wad also a hard blow for Hobbs to stomach. He said: “It's a bugger, isn't it? We don't really know what happened. They will do a post mortem.

“It's better to know, but at the same time it isn't going to make any difference now. All you can do is to remember the good times. We don't know what his future would have been anyway.”

Ascot vet Simon Knapp said the gelding was dead when he arrived at the scene.

“Richard Johnson did well to get on to his head so quickly. The horse wouldn't have known what was going on. He died of a suspected broken neck, to go that quickly. It was a tragic racing accident.”

He added: “There'll be a post mortem. We normally like to have post mortems so we know what has happened. The result will be reported back to the trainer and the clerk of the course. When you have a good horse going that speed it happens, and it's a tragedy when it does.”

In January 2005, there was little hint of the glories to come when Detroit City stepped on to the racecourse for the first time for trainer Jeremy Noseda. On his debut in a Lingfield maiden he finished ninth, but he soon left that form behind and won his next three.
It was a similar story when, later that same year, he was switched to jumping after being purchased by Warner. He was well beaten on his first start when 3-1 favourite for a juvenile hurdle at Warwick, but the penny dropped most spectacularly because he them embarked on his sequence of eight straight wins which saw him unbeaten throughout 2006.

Often either blinkered or equipped with a visor for seven of his wins, he would often be off the bridle and looking to struggle, but would then respond with the utmost gameness. In the Triumph Hurdle he beat stable companion Fair Along by five lengths; that autumn he beat Inchnadamph a length in the Cesarewitch.

However, his impressive sequence of wins came to a shuddering halt in last season's Champion Hurdle, for which he was 6-4 favourite. He finished a well beaten sixth, and again failed to produce his true form when favourite for the Aintree Hurdle a month later.

Although a thorough check up over the summer revealed no specific problem, he was given a soft-palate operation to assist his breathing, and he also received shock-wave treatment to improve his back.

His owner, Terry Warner, was not available on Saturday night.

**Later, Ascot's Nick Smith said a post-mortem showed Detroit City had suffered a ruptured valve on the right-hand side of his heart.

Thank you for the hugs. I am actually very upset by his death - he's the first horse I have known (cetainly foaled) to die in competition - at least that I know about anyway.

Very very sad I actually cried watching the race as I saw him go down because the fall did look fatal from the word go. I think the awful thing was that he didn't die instantly and his legs were moving around but not due to nerves because to me he looked as though he was trying to get back up again but could not.
RIP little man

Very sad for the owner too after he lost old yard favourite Rooster Booster 2 years ago in tragic circumstance as well.
It was sad that he didn't have the chance to show if the old sparkle was back after having another wind operation in the summer. I thought he looked big and well for his reappearance today and maybe even strengthened up a little.
Very sad loss though and for the second Saturday in a row it has been a very grey day for all those involved
