Been up to the yard today with Alfie's owner (I have him on full loan).

This weekend we found out he has arthritis, and is lame on 3 legs and in pain.

We've decided we're going to put him to sleep.

I'm devastated I don't think words can describe how gutted I am :(

I wish life wasn't so cruel and things like this wouldn't happen I'm sure we all do. Anyhow I'd just like to say a great thankyou for everyone's advice that has been given to me over that last 2 years of having Alfie.

Now going to spend every last minute I can with him untill most likely next week when he's PTS.

Love you Alfie forever and ever, my best friend my everything. Xxxxxx

So sorry, had to make the same choice in feb this year, i know how hard it is, not that there WAS a choice for us.

At least you care enough to get the vet, a cob we know has been very stiff/lame for months and the owner still hasnt got the vet! Ive been so tempted to go in her tack shop and tell her in front of her customers what i think of her horse care. Its one my daughter used to ride.

I lost my boy last year in similar circumstances - his arthritis went from manageable to awful in just a few months. It's a horrible time, but you are doing the right thing.

Thanks guys :)

He's on bute now so he can chill out for a few days :)

Leaving his proper owner to sort everything out because I'm not in any fit state to do anything.

Oh, how tragic for you. So sorry to read this. Probably the bravest and most unselfish thing for you to do for Alfie though. ((((hugs)))

:-(((((((. Sadly it's all part of the responsibility of keeping horses - your boy is lucky to have two people that care enough to step up and take the respnsibility for the bad as well as the good. You're a good person doing the right thing xx

So sorry, for what its worth i would do the same and make him pain free. Would also get some painkillers in him until pts so he can have a week of kicking up his heels!~quote

I agree, I'm very sorry xx

((((((hugs))))))) to you and Alfies owner. xx

This poem helped me through the tough time of loosing Lucy. I hope you to can find some comfort from the words. xx

If the day should come when I'm in pain,
And you know I won't be well again,
Promise you'll do what must be done,
If this is the battle that can't be won.

It'll break your heart, but please be kind,
Don't let your grieving sway your mind.
For this is when you'll let me see
Just how much you do love me.

Together we've had happy years
The future now can hold no fears.
Please don't let me suffer
so When that days comes, please let me go.

For my usual vet please will you send?
But stay with me until the end.
Hold me steady, speak to me
Till my once bright eyes no longer see

In time I hope you'll come to see
It's the last kindness you'll do for me
One more time please stroke my mane
And know that I'll have no more pain.

And don't be sad that it was you
Who decided this was what to do.
We've been such buddies through the years
Don't let me be the cause of tears.

You'll always see me graze now,
with the sun upon my back
Painful limbs won't tire me now,
however long the hack.

I live now in your heart and mind,
a lovely place to stay.
And what you have in memories,
no one can take away.
