I have an internet friend who I met on a horse course online. She seems so lovely. You know when you just click with a person even though we’ve never met. I really like her. She runs a small horse sanctuary in Canada not far from where Heartland is filmed.
She posted on Facebook yesterday that due to the extreme cold she lost three of her horses. Well a horse a donkey and a mini horse. I’m so devastated for her.
imagine losing three in a day? The donkey was an old lady but the mini had seemed well and her horse she lost was only in her teens and seemed fit and fine. Such a blow. Can’t imagine! The temperature there is -34 with a wind chill taking it down to -48. They have ad lib hay and shelters but obviously just too much for them. So so sad.

Can't imagine what the cold temperature must be like as I've never been to any 'cold' country. How horrific. Not a nice way for them to go either. She must be devastated.

Years ago i came across a study on horses ability to thermo-regulate / withstand temperatures, unrugged.
It concluded that horses can heat themselves up easier in extreme cold than cool themselves in extreme heat. The coldest temp they recorded where the horse lost the ability to maintain warmth was -25. (Unrugged)

-48 is another level altogether, i cannot even imagine it. Your poor friend must be heart-broken, so sad to hear theyre having extreme temps this year. Canadians are so brave.

So sad, I have a friend in Canada she's recently had those temperatures and also wind gusts of 120kph which knocked her off her feet.
