Following on from post below about horsey with arthritis who needs some pain relief to stay field sound and hack out - has anyone used devils claw. If so was it effective?

Are there any other natural alternatives that you found useful?

Thanks

I use no bute for one of my ponies who had suspensory ligament problems a few years ago and a now only use it after he has been ridden although he used to have it every day.

Yes, used devils claw on a few horses with great sucess. It takes a while to build up in their system, so is only really good for long term use (bute will work straight away) but once you are at that point, it worked as well as bute did. Chat to your vet about how he recommends stopping bute / starting devils claw, because you don't want the horse to be in pain during the transition.

Devil's Claw is great once loaded into the system - as emma69 says. I buy the root and then soak the required amount in hot water, leave to cool and then add to feed. It works quicker as an infusion as the liquid gets into the system faster than having to just digest the actual root. Boswellia has the same properties but is easier on the digestive sysem than Devil's Claw. I buy my herbal things off e-bay (can't remember the shop but they do loads of stuff, including magnesium and various herbal mixes for different conditions).

My horse was permanently on a bute a day for arthritis at the age of 8. I switched him to "No Bute" in January and its worked brilliantly- so yes, its been a success, so far, fingers x.

Boswellia is another alternative kinder on the stomach.I bought mine of ebay from natural horse supplies.

This exact question was asked just yesterday. Several of us recommended Bute Free by Gold Label. It seems much more effective than No Bute and one or two others.

Im watching this thread with interest as i have a horse with bone spavin who is lame on and off. He's been on bute for a month, then half a bute for 2 weeks and we have just stopped giving him any to see how he fares. If he's still quite stiff then i'll be looking for an alternative to bute also.

Does anyone know which of the remedies mentioned above is the cheapest, or best value for money?

My 27yo pony is on half a bute a day. We did try devil's claw but it didn't help him at all & we had to go back to bute. Friend swears by it for her old horse, though, so I guess it works for some but not everyone.
