Devils Claw?

Excellent , anti-inflammitory and painkiller , as far as Im aware no side effects and can be used longterm .I have 2 elderly beasties on it and they are great on it . I take it as I dont do drugs on me or my horses unless absolutely necc !!!
 
Thank you! My veteran pony has just had muscle fibrosis diagnosed & needs an anti-inflammatory & just something to relieve any uncomfortable feelings he's having, i won't ever let him be on bute long term because of side affects so thought i'd give the devils claw a try!
 
My friend uses it on her old, arthritic mare and she reports that in fact it's far more effective than the bute was. And of course far less harmful when used longterm.
 
We gave our ex-broodie an old-age supplement, which had devil's claw as one ingredient. When she was in season, she bled heavily (she always has a greater blood-loss than most mares). Research showed that devil's claw can cause abortion in pregnant mares. We assumed that the mare's increased blood-loss was linked to that. We stopped using the supplement.
 
I've been led to believe that Devil's claw can have long term effects on the gut and GI tract.

I'd look at Boswellia as a more effective and less damaging alternative :)

Not used either myself but have heard first hand very good reports on Boswellia.
 
This is the first time I've posted on a forum but this for me is quite important. I have had my mare on devils claw for 6 months and 3 months ago she had a seizure in her field, she has severe bruising in her mouth despite being bitless and has had a couple of nose bleeds. I believe after researching devils claw the built up effect of it has caused this. I would advice caution as I have no idea if I have caused long term damage to my girly! I did tell our vet about it but he had nothing to say about it and just told us to not ride her for 6 months. Seizures in horses are most vexing but obviously it can be the most simple of things causing it.
 
Devils claw works for my bone spavined cob, but i do detox him every 6 months, in other words he has none for a week and i give him herbs to detoxify for 3 days. Never had any problems touch wood.
 
I tried Devil's Claw on my current TB and also on my previous one - it made no difference whatsover. However I take it when my back gets bad and it seems to work for me!

I've found Boswellia far more effective with my current TB - she has spavin, arthritis in one fetlock and navicular, but seems to be doing ok with the Boswellia.
 
Boswellia is a much gentler, more effective option. I've used it with great success.
It actually has positive effects on the digestive intestinal tract which is a bonus.
 
I'm sure Devils Claw is not suitable or not recommended for horses with sensitive tummies or something along those lines? I researched a few things and chose a product with no devils claw as my horse shows ulcer like symptoms. This was all a while ago and I can't remember the exact details! Equine America Buteless is good

Same here, I read it somewhere that you should not give Devils Claw with ulcers or suspected uclers, but I cannot remember where I read it.
 
I use devil's claw on both my dog and horse. It has helped both, the dog much more. I always give the correct dose and always have periods when I do not feed, to give them a rest from it. I have had no problems with it and in fact my dog has even started to be able to jump on the sofa again.
 
I have used liquid devils claw on both my horses and my dogs. I would also say that I would only use it for short periods, not long term - but it definitely helps when I do use it.
