Posting on behalf of a friend of mine, who will be moving to Devon for a few weeks...

she is a larger lady so would require a stocky horse to ride, and from what i can gather, would like to do some jumping/xc or trekking. She has ridden for some time, and is happy walk, trot, canter etc. Has done plenty of jumping in the past (we used to do it together) but has lost her confidence, so will want help with that.

Can anyone recommend anywhere for her to go? I dont have a clue with regards to Devon, so thought you lovely people may be able to help me out?

Big hugs for all my helpers :) x

Cholwell Farm just outside Mary Tavy - they don't have a website - basically do trekking and limited flatwork lessons (no school so lessons up on the moor). Definitely have a couple of weight carriers and all pretty well schooled. Straight on the moor and very limited roadwork (generally as a sneaky way back to avoid riding straight into the wind on the open moor...) all of us on that ride were quite happy with the suggestion on a particularly windy day.

Actually found the website now! http://www.cholwellridingstables.co.uk/

If you fancy North Devon/Exmoor, I can highly recommend Outovercott (sorry might be Outavercott) not sure about spelling! which is near Lynton in North Devon.

I holidayed in the area about five years ago, and discovered this little yard. Its lovely! Family run and had a really nice friendly feel to it. I rode out on the open moorland on a super little Shire X TB mare who was as sure-footed as a deer and it was just sheer bliss!

I think they'd have plenty of weight-carriers and also would make sure your friend was mounted according to her ability; likewise they'd not take her out on the open moor (or at least not a fast ride) unless she was confident enough.

Don't know any more places on Dartmoor, apart from Skaigh; I had a cob on winter loan from there and ended up keeping him!!!
