Video Dex is lame... HHO Good Vibes please!

So vet has been, he has a small OCD chip in that left stifle where the patella should be running smoothly it's now inhibited by the chip, so is to be booked in for surgery. It's good news and bad news, obviously surgery is less than ideal ever, but they also x-rayed his complete spine, other stifle, both hocks and all fetlocks and he said they're some of the cleanest x-rays he's ever seen so that's good news. They obviously don't know until they're in there doing the surgery if there's anything else going on, we didn't do ultrasound to look at soft tissues as they need to operate regardless and as he's only got £3k coverage with Agria we were being somewhat cost conscious, but no signs of arthritis or any obvious damage so it should hopefully be surgery, 3 months off and then a return to normal life all being well 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

If anyone has any experience of OCD, I would be grateful to hear any stories! I have come across it before, my 18.3hh'er had an OCD chip removed as a 4yo, but he was crocked from head to toe by the time I pity bought him so I'm hoping that's not an indication of how it usually goes!

He hasn't ever jumped as I was being conscious of his growing legs, but I think I have now decided that his future won't ever be to jump. The odd log out hacking potentially, but I am not a huge jumper and he will now be more susceptible in that joint to arthritis forming due to the surgery, so I think it's just the prudent decision to make.

My yearling had it. Main thing absolutely rest as much as possible pre op so the chip doesn’t do damage.
Mine came back fine.

The vet said to turn him out as usual in normal size paddock as he thought he could do the surgery on Tuesday but office have since called me and I think they possibly can't do it until the 2nd June so I am going to ask for updated advice based on the new date, as it's a good 10 days away. I think perhaps postage stamp size field, which we do have, is a better option for now.

I’ve no experience of this, but fingers firmly crossed for a good outcome 🙂.

Please can I ask a numpty question - is the op done standing, or does he need a GA?

Thank you - it's a full GA, my understanding is because they need the leg to be at a certain extension to make sure they can access/clean all the joint should it need to

X-rays today - £400-500, visit & examination & sedation £150, operation £2500-3000, hospital stay overnight - £???, post op visit and suture removal £120 - + VAT. That is the current estimate and is at a minimum, assuming all goes well.

I am really pleased the cause was clearly identified and the view of people who have direct experience are positive about the prognosis. Having not had a good outcome of attempting to rehab an Irish Draught with SI issues I was crossing my fingers and toes this this was not something you would have to experience. I hope everything goes well for Dex.

I've only got experience of it in dogs but was a large breed and still growing - the joint just did not come together properly. Was operated on and lived to a great old age but there was some arthritis in later life but nothing more than one might expect at that stage of life. Fingers crossed for Dex.🤞🤞🤞

My friend jumps hers - he's a very gangly warmblood & got sent back from breakers because he had no push from behind. Vets did surgery & she took it quiet for a couple of years but he's 8 now and out doing stuff.

My friend's young Spanish horse had this op last year when they were 7, it went really smoothly and the horse has now returned to work with no issue. Fingers crossed for Dex.

Vet appreciation post! After discussing I only have £3k vet fee cover, my vet said he wouldn't charge for the initial lameness exam because he attended without the x-ray machine (he squeezed me into a busy day just to take a look as I said I may need bute, so that was kind).

And then they have charged me for a shared visit, even though the other person was a horse the vet wanted to trot up FOC because he was curious to see how he moved following something a while back... Plus £300 for minimum 3 plates each on 8 joints plus a whole spine which was an additional 5 plates... Vets get a lot of flack but you really can't complain at that can you.

Crikey I like your vet :)

I had a youngster who had OCD in his front fetlocks. Due to a misdiagnosis from my then vet this was not picked up until he was 5 (when I moved vets). He had them removed under GA and then had a strict rehab plan for 12 weeks. He came back into full work and got to PSG level dressage before arthritis in his hocks and knees caused me to retire him at 20.

This is really encouraging, thank you! Flatwork and hacking is what I enjoy the most so to hear your boy got to PSG is great news! Our ultimate goal isn't anywhere near that but I would like to be able to get back to schooling and training in that way!

Best of luck for tomorrow. I’ve got one who had surgery for OCD and has returned to the same workload although it was hock rather than stifle. I did take it slowly after but was pleased with the results.
