Diahatsu Fourtrak as a towing car

Can't say I've used one to tow. But what you need to check is the year of the car, the engine size and in the technical specifications, you need to check what capcaity it can tow for a braked trailer.

There must be a dealer website where you can check out this info?

Hope this helps!

My OH had a Diahatsu Fourtrak 2.8 TD for towing my horse and a friends when we went hunting,it was fab.We used to regularly tow a 14hh and HW 16hh to events and there are a lot of steep hills around us,i would definatley have one again.Great work machine,It would be fine to tow your boy around,it'd be easy peasy for a fourtrak. It's one of the best ones to tow with in my opinion and we've had a few 4x4's as my OH drives them for a living (off road driver for 4x4 companies). We once took a 16.3hh and the 16hh hunting and it was fab, didn't struggle at all,it would be ideal for towing a heavy horse.

I used a Fourtrak to tow for years before recently switching to a Disco (as mine were getting old and they've stopped making them). I have had 5 or 6 Diahatsu's and they are absolutely brilliant for towing, mine never let me down and were really reliable. I *think* they are 2.8 diesel engines aren't they?

We've had several (used to work for Daihatsu), all very good but now no longer made so some parts ie panels could be hard to find/expensive.

Agree with this sentiment. My sister had one to tow with and it did her fine for many years. It did rust out in the end which is why she swapped it out. They are a smaller 4x4, but still very capable !

A very good resource for bits on japanese cars including the imports is http://www.milneroffroad.com/

I've used them a few times and they are a lot cheaper than the main dealers for parts !

I started towing this year using a Fourtrak - I really like it.

Being a smaller 4x4 I have found it easy to adapt to and manouver - having never driven anything other than small Peugeot 206 sized cars before.

I am pulling a single trailer with it but my dad has pulled his Canal Boat with it as its max towing capacity is 3.5T and had no problems.

We have found plenty of parts at the scrap yard.

For the money we paid for it £1600 for M Reg 85K miles we are really pleased with it, only use it for towing on the weekends or if my car is in the garage.

I wouldnt be without my Fourtrak, or Rocky, as they are called here in France.Mine even has new number plates now. So JDI,

Just Do It, buy one I mean!!! Spares can be obtained easily and I recommend you joining the Daihatsu Drivers Club website. Bon chance.

We are on our 2nd too, they are very reliable. We havent had a problem with spares, mind you touching wood we havent really had much trouble with them. I'd recomend going for a newer one, that is after L reg I think, as the suspension was changed from leaf springs and the ride is much smoother.

fantastic little tow cars, nice meaty 2.8td engine, towing capacity of 3500kgs, well withing legal limits towing horse trailers, basic inside but so capable, i've got off godforsaken showgrounds, in deep mud leaving posh cars such as bmw x5's stuck in the mud! mine copes with steep hills just fine, parts are easy enough to get - i get mine from milner off road, very cheap and reliable - go for an L REG onwards as they have better suspension.

Thanks for the link to Milner Off Road!!

I've had my Fourtrak for 3 yrs and love it. It's pretty old now but still looks good.

It's got so much more boot space than other 4x4's in the same class, plus a greater tow capacity. The ride is hard that's for sure - more like a Land Rover than a Discovery, but it's nice and square, so easy to manoeuvre, and you never feel like the trailer is shunting you, even down the steepest hill with a full load.

I'm hoping my car will go on forever as they're a bit of a rarity round here!
