Hi

Does anyone know if there is anything you could give a horse as a supplement etc as he seems to have occasional diarrhoea. I think he is lacking in some sort of nutrient. Although he is eating normally, drinking normally and poo is normal. However he does have signs of diarrhoea on his lower legs and tail.

He is being fed haylage morning and night and also cool mix. Could it be because he is stabled and not getting nutrients from the grass as he would if he was turned out all day/night?

I think i remember someone saying about electrolytes as an extra supplement but am unsure.

Yea for he is fine in every other way, I dont think its life threatening or anything but just wondered if anyone else had this problem and was worried he would be loosing nutrients etc......

My horse developed chronic diarrhoea last April. He had loads of tests done which came up inconclusive and all that would control it was steroids which worked until July when I finally had to have him PTS and in the Post Mortem he has found to have advanced melonomas throughout his intestines.

Now his was chronic, so obviously you don't have such a serious problem. But things I had to do to try anything to help it, is take him off haylage onto hay. Also off any mix/beet/oil onto pure high fibre diet. Do not turn out onto spring grass. You can also put him on a probiotic (or natural yogurt). There is very little a vet can give them to help, save vet strength probiotics, a clay based liquid, codiene or steroids. When was the last time he was wormed? Red worm (pretty sure it was that one) damage can cause it too. A Panacure Guard will sort that out.

Hope that helps. Feel free to PM if I can help any further.

I hope that's of some help. Maybe change one thing at a time and see if you can find the contributing factor. I did give some electrolytes at one point, but vet wasn't that fussed as he wasn't getting dehydrated and was drinking normally.

I forgot about this post..... he is now turned out most of the time but seems to have anxiety whent he other horse is taken away from him and he is left stabled. It must be seperation anxiety, he has the diarrhoea when he is left alone in the stables plus also walks the stable and sweats a lot
