Well I dragged him out of his three month holiday at the begining of April, our target destination a county show (Royal Cornwall). You all watched his progress, gave me tips, pointers and suggestions when time after time I came on here asking for advice or posting about his progress. Over his holiday he had lost weight and topline, turned into a muddy yak. You really arent the only ones who doubted my sanity! So many times I didn't think I would get there, not least last Saturday when it felt like I was holding a stick of dynamite at the end of a leadrope having gone to our first show for a practice. So with a bit of tweaking to our plan, we went a day early to allow him time to settle in. This was not without its scary moments either. We were going in YO's three week old box with living, which the day before we set off decided to have a computer hissy fit and lose all indicator function! Thankfully this was all fixed, but I dont mind saying that at times I did wonder whether I was being sent signs! This entire journey was all done very publically, and whilst I tried to trust my gut instinct with ben and how to handle things, I also worried about making a complete gaff and letting him down and having to share that... not that letting him down privately would have really been any easier for me to swallow.

I would like to state that my pride in ben was even more magnified by the fact that at his first show he had 2 calmers and couldnt cope, whereas he put up with everything on wednesday and thursday with nothing in his system.

Wednesday
Im not sure if you are aware of this but there are (I found out on wednesday) two 5 o'clocks in a day:eek: For anyone who knows me personally they will know what a shock this was to me! I got to the yard, loaded up and suited and booted benjamin up after bringing him in from the field, he looked the dude that he is, and behaved like it too, striding straight up the ramp. We set off at 7.15 and arrived at 8.40 making really good time, he traveled really well and I could watch him through a video link which was great for me as im really nervous about traveling horses.

Gates opened at 9am and we drove in, parked up and went to find his stable. He was stabled over with the showjumpers which was actually really nice, it was set away from too much hub bub but with enough to ease him into things, my edt was there with his son and all their horses so I knew lots of people around me. We had to pick a crop of orange mushrooms from the stable:eek: but made sure we got em all before bringing him up, giving him a haynet and water and letting him chill. He unloaded fantastically well and was calm and relaxed despite other horses and horseboxes and a completely alien environment around him. Once stabled, Aunty G and I went for a good old stonk around the show ground, I grabbed a nice bacon and egg bap, we poked around the stores being set up for bargins and went to see my friends charolais bull.

After a couple of hours to settle in, I went and took him to the collecting ring to lunge him off, at home he will try and fall out through his shoulder on one rein when he comes close to the edge of the school, here though he had no edge to cling to as the ring was so big and he did some lovely work in walk trot and canter on both reins... we then meandered back (a few whinneys and snorts on the way) getting a good look at everything. Then I popped his bed down and left him to it for a few hours giving him a huge hug. I amused myself, making some great new friends out of our neighbors, and toddling off to see some friends down with the cattle. Everyone was so bloody nice, completely take back any preconceived ideas that I had otherwise! The trainer I sent him to to be backed was there and it was lovely to chat with her and have her know we had made it less than a year after she backed him!

After a g and t I went and saddled him up, I was so lacking in self confidence earlier when I lunged him that Id asked Aunty G to come with me... She told me not to be so silly, that I could handle anything from him and not to stand for any funny business. Having seen his behavior earlier I felt much happier about riding him but this time she came with me unbidden and just sat and watched... it was lovely, I rode him round the walk ways a few times, once around the jumping warm up area then down into the warm up ring, he had a couple of flighty moments as I took him into the warm up ring on one side... just emu horse, so she suggested I take him all the way around to the other entrance to the next door ring which did the trick. By the time we were there he was much better and within a minute I had some fantastic work out of him, a couple of rein backs and a few halts and he worked so well. He was doing a bit of halt to trot and trot to halt... my boy felt better schooling in this arena than in the arena at home. He even wanted to canter although I didnt want to risk a slip as it was his first time on grass and no shoes.

During the afternoon I cleaned and oiled the bridle, about five times just to be sure it was clean:o Using a tooth pick on the holes to make sure they were clean and a micro fibre cloth on the metal. (I was on fire!)

Once back in the stable his essentials were topped up and i went back to have a cuppa followed by a couple of g and t and a catch up with next door. Bath time happened at about 5.30, he was scrubbed from top to toe, I even scrubbed his hooves of any ingrained gunk!, by 6.30 my baby boy was fed, bathed, chalked, tail plaited, legs bandaged, hoddied and rugged for the night.

When I returned, the neigbors provided me with a fantastic barbecue... never had such a fantastic and much appreciated feast! Sadly I was just too exhausted to have a post work G and T but a cuppa was flipping nectar.

By this time my feet were throbbing and I was walking around without shoes on to cool my tootsies.

When I went to do his 10pm check my heart burst, he was asleep in his stable and I had the most precious moment when I crept in and sat on the floor with his head resting on my knee as I fed him his haylage. I lifted his nose to my mouth and gave him such a kiss... I was so proud of him.

By the time I got back Aunty G was in bed and my god it was all I could do to crawl into my sleeping bag, I was shattered, I really didnt know how I was going to make it out of bed the next morning especially since I couldn't charge my phone as the generator wasnt on, thankfully Aunty G is an early riser so I could rest well.

Thursday

I woke up at 6am and Aunty G woke up at 6.30am (get me:p) After a cuppa, I went and watered, skipped out, replaced haynet and gave ben breakfast... then I saw his hocks!!!!!! Seriously manky and blacker than the ace of spades!!

At about 8.30 I took him down for a ridden warm up, he was more sparky in the warm up ring today but walked around the walkways like he owned them:D once in the warm up ring it took quite a bit of riding in before he worked well and focused but the fact is HE DID work exceptionally well and around all the other horses warming up, of which there were never less than 4 in the ring!

After a good session I took him back to his stable and went back to have a cuppa and breakfast and a bit of a gossip with the girls. at about 10.30 we had some in hand practice, again this started a bit erratic but got better and better as we went on, we were around the ridden horses cantering around etc and I almost cried as I saw him becoming more and more focused on my commands and reacting to them.

Next after yet again putting him away I gave him a wee break and then started tarting him up at about 11.30 (he was now getting slightly tucked up so I gave him a nice cold fresh bucket of water which he drank over the one already in his stable! I began working on those hocks and any other patches that caught my eye, bathing the tail one last time, gelling and bandaging it. I managed to borrow some bic razors from another competitor as although my father was supposed to be bringing some, I was worried he may forget (he had enough on his plate with mums op). Ben let me bic his nose, shaving it smooth like a babys bum:p:p:p I plaited and oiled him, wiped his nose inside and out! Wiped his bum and checked his schlong, he put up with so damn much, so willingly!

I looked at the calmer... looked at him, looked at the calmer again and left it were it was unused.

I ran back to the Horsebox to meet my dad, had a 30 second moment of meltdown/hysteria (the only moment of the two days) was talked down by Aunty G... 'if you get stressed Ben will get stressed' she said and my nerves disappeared, I couldn't let my baby down.

I wiped down the bridle and cleaned the bit, downed a cup of tea, changed into my gear and had a quick cigarette on the way to the stable to tack the boy up.

I walked down to the collecting ring next to the inhand ring, which cleverly of the planners was right next to the shooting demo area:rolleyes: but he got used to the gunshots and I praised the hell out of him for not trying to run away, we did yet more in hand practice, i glugged down a bottle of water, we smiled for my dads camera (well tried to smile:rolleyes:) and into the ring we went.

In the ring, I had to have a tighter hold than I would have liked because he still had more energy than id have liked. there were two four year olds (him and another who had been showing last season) and the other three were about 9/10yrs old... four had not turned up. There were moments when I could relax my hold and to my utter pride he didnt throw a wobbly when we trotted, didnt try and spin around me and he made the turns. He got a bit fractious when we stood for others to trot on, but the steward was my EDT and somehow that normality calmed me, and therefore him. We trotted around on our own, again he made the corners and only slightly shied at a pram:rolleyes:

Despite lots of practice, he didnt like or understand standing in the line up. kept him occupied with grass but will definately use a full pack of polos loose in my pocket next time, much easier than bending down for grass!

when it came our time for the judge, he stood perfectly first time, the judge was really lovely and asked how much experience he had, and kept said hes doing really well, then asked me to walk of, as I did he let out a flying buck right at the judge:o I felt somewhat ok because I know another horse did this earlier in another class:p:p. He then tried to circle me so I turned and asked if I could bring him back and start again... she was more than happy to let him. He walked out much better and trotted around pretty well, the first turn was a bit forced but for the most part he did his job.

He flew around the lap of honor!!! I was dragged! He was saying, 'oh yeah baby I know this role now!!

I apologised to the judge for the buck and she just smiled and waved it off (she was really lovely about it!)

Upon leaving we got some lovely complements on his trot, so if he can just relax a bit more so I can give him a longer rein so he can have his head better this will really be a selling point for him.

He definitely wanted to go back to his stable... stonking along with one purpose in the world:rolleyes: and who can blame him... he did so flipping well and he looked like he belonged in that ring!

An hour later, ben had loaded without hesitation, and he, aunty G and I were on the road home. We made excellent time back and within ten steps into his field he was down and rolling... possibly the most deserved roll of his life! I popped his salt lick, a fresh load of water and a speedie beet and chaff soup out for him, and hes been out ever since having a break. Tomorrow, he has a sports massage and sunday we have a lovely hack out.

Me, I am still knackered, aching in places I never knew could ache! But my christ its a small price to pay! I plan to do in hand and ridden at stithians in July!!!!!

My last post will be to post a link to the pro picture website so you can see those photos later this week. I hope youve enjoyed sharing in our journey, Ive certainly enjoyed sharing it. Thanks to everyone for their support and input with this, as I said the other day, even the negatives have been helpful.

WE DID IT!!! I CANT BELIEVE IT BUT WE DID!

Well done! What a fantastic report. You've worked so hard and deserve every success with your lovely boy.

Very well done, we managed to miss your class in fact we saw very little of the show outside the sheep tent!

Ha Ha, I hardly made it out of the horsey area myself so I know what you mean :D but it was worth it for you with the sheep... well done :D I did meet hedgewitch and Mad4/Madfour? during RC, was really nice to meet them and Hedgewitch took some fab pics, the three most recently added on FB... am hoping i can pop them on here too.

Well done!!!!

We were late  So only saw your lap of honour but managed to get some pics for you - I'll get them up tomorrow if you like? I must say I thought he looked fab trotting around :)

Bloody hell woman you have made me shed a tear!!! I love your commitment to Ben, you turned him out to perfection, well produced and looking in perfect condition, I am so very pleased for you. Hey.............I have a nice TB that could do with a bit of your magic! Might just send him down to you. xx

Thank you very much :D It would have been nice if he was not tucked up, although I think I almost got away with it because he is bum high so he just looked like a growing weed! He stopped growing at 2 for a year and a half but is making up for lost time at the moment! Last time I measured him he was 15.3 I really want to see what he is now! I said it in the other thread, but because of your skepticism your comments really do mean the world to me and again i will say, anyone who does this regularly I bow down to! It is incredibly hard work! I cant believe that Ive not shown in ten years and never ever at anything like this level and Ive done ben and myself proud. Thank you for your compliments.... as long as your TB aint grey... send it down:p:p:p

so glad you had a good day!!!! heard a piece on the radio thursday and thought of you! :) onwards and upwards!

Lovely report as usual. Well done and looking forward to his next foray into the big bad world of showing ;):D

naww, bless! thank you x here is hoping!

Better be worth it, I cant even fit my throbbing swollen feet into heels of any description! Strangely enough though, ben and I have definately worked the hardest we ever have on wednesday and thursday... but I cant wait to get on his back on sunday and wish I could tomorrow, but his massage comes first and foremost :)

Lovely report as usual. Well done and looking forward to his next foray into the big bad world of showing ;):D

Thank you so much... Ive always hated showing and showing a horse with grey bits is a fleckering nightmare! However, Im really looking forward to it too! Cant wait to get into the school now and start working on that canter!

I'm really, really pleased for you QB. I know I commented on your other thread, saying I was worried he wouldn't deal with it etc, but I'm so happy to have been proved wrong and what a great experience it was for you both. What are your plans for the rest of the summer with him?

Soooo pleased for you. I thought of you and kept everything crossed, not that I needed to by the sounds of it! It's amazing how much planning and preparation you went to but it blimin well paid off and you've laid the foundations for a great career for you and Ben. Can't wait to hear more! Go Team Ben !!!

Thank you, both of you!

WIC: believe me... I had everything crossed... I thought he would behave better, but my christ he has blown me away with his behaviour! :D Thank you :D

HAMM: Dont worry about it, as I said I had serious doubts and planned accordingly but there are and were always risks, I just knew his biggest two triggers were jumping off a lorry into 'everything' and having lots of horses from his yard around him. Id have never pushed him into the ring if he hadnt been happy, but it was a gamble... im so happy it was the right one!

Plans wise, we are aiming for inhand and ridden at stithians and then looking at learning a bit of jumping, so towards the end of the season he can do some clear rounds and midi rounds, he will also do some walk and trot dressage, next year we will be showing and dressage but also starting some med jumping. By the time he is six i hope to have him nicely rounded for some eventing at the latter end of the season.

Let me know if you are anywhere else and I'll make sure to have a chat/get pics if I'm there. I'm just uploading pics to my computer now :D
Very pleased with Gem, she behaved really well apart from a blip where she didnt want to stand still but with a bit of grass she was fine ;) didnt place but don't really mind. We could of easily been in the wrong class haha, although it was pony breeding so mix of SP/SHP they were all big Show Ponies with no markings and little Gem definitely stood out so was a case of whether the judge liked Show Hunters or not!

Just done a search for your post QB as I thought you probably would have posted how it went... Well done!!

SO glad it all went well, sounds like you and Ben had a fab time and this is the start of a successful showing career!! :D

PS I hope your Mum is on the mend too!

Hi guys, only just seen your posts since my last one on here, thank you! Ben is going well, we are aiming for a ridden class in 2 weeks time... Twiggy will PM you incase you don't get this, Constantine show is a lovely local show, and there are about three of its from my yard entering the ridden coloureds, we are hoping for a 1,2,3 but for Ben, any experience is a good experience x
