hi all this is in new lounge also.
my boy (9 yrs) is in a bit of a bad way he was diagnosed with diastemas last yr and had the gaps widened which seemed to work, but he now has food packed again and has more diastemas and his gums are bleeding badly he is in a LOT of pain and has lost a lot of weight,he went back to vets yesterday and they found his mouth was a state??They worked on him for 3 hrs but felt it was to risky to keep him sedated for longer. The vet says he will have to be on 4 bute a day to keep him pain free
What i dont understand is why he hasnt had any antibiotics at all, even when he came back from newmarket last yr i was given no aftercare or antibiotics for him, which makes me think this is the reason it is so bad now,i have to decide whether to have him pts or not but feel i need all the facts first does any one have experience of this please??

also just to add he has lami at the mo also and they are running tests for diabetes type 2 and cushings.so he cant be turned out to grass either.nor have haylage or dry hay :(

After ever feed syringe his mouth out with a weak solution of a mouth wash (my EDT told me to use listerine , the fresh mint one.

I have 2 mares that have this problem and this is what I have done everyday for the last three years . With one of them her mouth has gone from being smelly and the gaps full of food to the mouth being much better with no blood or smell.

As all my horses get older I will be doing this everyday.

I also use a large toothbrush to clean the mouth (I get the tooth brushes from Boots- I use a baby's bottle cleaning brush, does the job well)

After the first couple of times that she had her teeth done with the Diastemas she was give Bute and Antibiotics. She has her teeth done every six months.

It is well worth using th mouth wash. If you get a large (Bladder) syringe it is easy to syringe the mouth. I use two syringes each time.

What do you feed him. You need to make his feeds very wet. I have just stared using the new Baileys "Fiber Nuts" which gives them plenty of extra Fiber that helps to keep the weight on them.
