Hi all,
I have a 21yo pony who has a few diastemas - he seems fine with long stemmed forage like hay and is fine with grass, but chaff isn't ideal for him. He doesn't quid at the moment but the dentist noticed bits of chaff get stuck in his teeth.
He is fed on speedibeet but I'd like to mix something with it to slow him down a bit - was thinking some high fibre cubes softened down slightly? He is a good doer so doesn't need much.
Any tips appreciated!

I have a 17 year old Connie with a missing molar so there’s a gap and he’s about to have an incisor out and also found usual short chop chaff was a real struggle for him so I switched him over to ReadiGrass with his Senior mash which is much longer and he doesn’t have a problem with it at all. A little of it goes a very long way and I’m only on my second bag all winter.

ohh thank you, i haven't tried this before! is it longer chop than your usual chaff?

I have a 23yo with a few gaps where food is getting stuck, the vet suggested not feeding any chop so I'm using Allen & Page Fast fibre with a balancer, it becomes like a mash within a couple of minutes.

I have a 21 y o with diastemas
My vet said to not to feed hay or chop so other than grazing he just has soaked grass nuts
Not being able to feed hay is a pain; I guess it depends on the individual horse and how much stuff is getting stuck

thanks! luckily not much gets stuck at the moment, only if he eats chaff! might just stick with his mash for now :)

I have a 27 yr old with diastema’s and missing teeth and our vet dentist doesn’t like chaff being fed. I feed soaked Baileys grass cobs in the winter for a breakfast and at night soaked Dodson and Horrell fibre cubes with her supplements and some Top spec lite balancer and she looks great. I do flush her mouth out with hose a couple of time a week too.

One of mine has diastemas, he's not allowed any chaff at all but can have long fibre. He would be allowed unmolassed beet but sadly he thinks that is disgusting and refuses to touch it.

Fast fibre is great and soaks in minutes, Bailey’s meadow cobs too. We don’t have dental issues but we’re recommended these for her stomach issue.

Vet also recommended Saracen Relieve twice a week as it encourages a lot of drinking.

My 24 year old horse recently had a couple of gaps in his teeth made wider to prevent feed getting stuck. Time will tell if the treatment prevents any issues but no issues so far.

ETA it hasn’t quoted for some reason, I was trying to quote this

I feed the same, mine has a few less teeth so struggles with hay so I add simple systems hay care in the winter. But that might be a bit much if you have a good doer

How about a low calorie grass nut that can be soaked? I use Emerald Green Meadow magic nuts

Mine has diastemas , although he can currently manage short soft hay , he doesnt eat as much of it as he used to . I have added simple systems hay replacer and non molassed sugar beet so he has enough to eat overnight . He will eat chaff in his feeds and in his big night bucket too .
