Diatomaceous Earth??

I use Diatomaceous Earth in my hen house mixed into the shavings, on the perches and in the nest boxes, on and around the soil beneath the house, and mixed into the hens' moistened morning mash.

It is most important that the correct kind of DE is used. It should be 100% amorphous non-crystalline silicon dioxide with no additives, which is completely non-toxic. Industrial grade crystalline silica DE is to be avoided. There are 3 grades of DE: natural (unheated), straight calcined (heated) and flux calcined (heated). ONLY THE NATURAL UNHEATED DE IS USED AS FOOD GRADE.

There is a very informative book, by Tui Rose, called Going Green Using Diatomaceous Earth How-To Tips. It covers the use of DE, which is not a chemical, but a physical insecticide, in homes, gardens, farms, animals (including horses), farms and the environment.

I noticed that your link illustrated some rather expensive examples of DE. It can be purchased, in 25 kilo sacks, for considerably less money.

I haven't used DE on my carpets for fleas, because I don't have a flea problem. But, if I did, I would apply it without hesitation. I have dusted it into my straw bedding in the past. I don't use straw anymore, though.

I purchased a 25 kilo sack, over a year ago, from a poultry farmer in the next village. It lasts forever, unless you've got thousands of bird (I've got 3). I haven't looked at ebay lately, but I know when I did, there were tonnes of sellers. I paid £46. for that huge sack.
