Hi Emily
I will now see what Dibbs has to say for himself. He is a funny one isnt he in that sometime you would say he doesnt act like a horse. I feel that there are times he doesnt know how to react with other horses and then act inappropriately, rather like perhaps an Autistic or Aspergers child does I am not saying he is Autistic and I dont know if horses have these issues, this is the closest description I can fine for him.
He is a nutter around other horses...!
Although he is clearly a gelding, it is like he doesnt know what he is, I dont feel for a minute that he is a rig but more that when he meets with other horses he gets over the top with excitement and it feels like either adrenaline or hormone rushing through his system and then he act basically completely stupidly, almost rushing into them at time, as if to say hey can I play, oops I have knocked into you the other horse will get fed up and chase Dibbs off, Emily I hope the way that I am describing things makes sense! It is hard to give an actual word or description for the issue with other horses but basically something rushing through his bloodstream when he meets other horses either at grass or even sometimes when you pass them out riding, can cause him to act completely OTT! Poor chap all he wants is to make friends and then he doesnt realise that it is HIS own actions that put others off!
I will put a photo at the end that this made me think of
I am not sure whether what he is showing me is a memory or a wish because I keep seeing him with a Shetland or small pony, it would only be 10hh approx, but it is one of those ponies that can look after itself I feel that Dibbs would be fine with a little fast pony who could get out the way of him, because it was quick and clever and that Dibbs would love it (actually be besotted with it that is the only thing Emily I think that he very quickly declares his love for another horse and then when they move away in disgust Dibbs is bereft!) Anyway he would love a little friend and I feel that a little pony would be perfect if that is what you are trying to achieve, I feel that Dibbs relationship with this clever little one (maybe Shetland, Welsh Section A or similar) would help him then integrate better with other horses in that the little one would be his only friend and would be accepted better into a herd because it isnt just Dibbs but Dibbs and his mate!
He doesn't live in a herd he lives with 1 other horse, a 15hh arab mare. He does very quickly 'declare his love' for other horses, but in the same way as most do, grooming each other etc. He is absolutely terrified of sh*tlands and small ponies!!
I do feel that Dibbs really wants a horsey friend! He knows he has you Emily and I feel that you spend a lot of time with him just hanging about and feeling sorry for him, he is happy that you have time to spend with him, so keep that going it is just that then he misses you when you go away.
He has a horse friend! I do like to spend time with him, but I don't feel sorry for him LOL!
I was wondering why he didnt know how to deal with other horses and feel that he was weaned far too soon, so didnt have lessons from his Mum as to how to react, then he developed a lovely relationship with humans instead because he has always been a friendly boy, and now doesnt really know if he is a human or a horse and how to react!
He is very friendly with people, much more so than with horses. Meeting other horses out hacking is interesting!
Going on to the next part of the questions, I get the feeling that where you are now is quieter! It seems to suit him better, because with lots of action he can get quite hyped up and this feels much more suited to Dibbs, so that is great. In terms of what you are doing now, he is a little confused in that he is still learning something new at the moment, he doesnt learn immediately he needs time to process things before he gets it and he is still processing, but to be honest the more time you can spend with Dibbs doing work or at play is great because he loves attention whether ridden or in hand or just you wandering around with him.
I have recently moved him to a field with just 1 other horse, from a few busy livery yards, and he does seem more chilled. We are just starting out in endurance. He does love attention.
He is happy in most aspects Emily, I dont want you to think he is an unhappy boy, just that he would love a friend, like most of us would like a cuddly toy! He is a smart and happy chap and likes your company which he depends on because you help him work things out!
ARRGHH he has a friend!!!
So a bit disappointed really, although some things ring true. This is the pic I sent:
And this is a pic showing what happens when other horses are around (it happens when I ride too, he does get very pumped up!
