My mum's 52 and had hers as she's a drs receptionist. The only reason she's had it was her surgery was part of a hub using the pziser vaccine and any spares at the end of the day they give to health care workers as they can't be refrozen. They never know how many vaccines they are actually going to receive and of course some people choose not to be vaccinated so some do go spare. Any that aren't used have to be discarded of otherwise.

What sort of numbers being discarded are we talking?
I’m a bit shocked at this ?

I'm super jealous as my young healthy friend was on her way home from work last night when a volunteer ran out of the big vaccination centre and said they had 10 Pfizer doses to use up NOW. So she got a dose there and then. They matched up her NHS number and she got a little card with the date and max date for the second dose , which she should now automatically get invited to.

I'm jealous, but also very pleased as it's a good way to use up doses (from missed appointments apparently) and start to inject a bit more immunity into the general population.

Yes we each had a first jab because we are over 80 and were contacted by our GP. We had Pfizer and the second is due on 1 April, 12 weeks later.
We need to stay locked down till then as our immunity on one dose doesnt justify emerging, although it should protect from severe Covid if we happen to catch it meantime.
I wont be riding till 3 weeks after the second dose. And yesterday I refused to attend the GP's surgery - stupid triage GP refused me a repeat prescription unless I actualy went in.

My parents who are in their 80's have had both parts of their vaccinations. Some friends of ours who are in their 50's had the first part of their vaccinations yesterday as they are foster parents which I assume puts them in the carers category.

It was a huge relief to me when my parents had their vaccinations as I'd been so worried about them catching it.

It does seem deeply random. My mother-in-law hasn't heard anything yet, in spite of being 83, with dementia and heart problems. My mum (75) is having her first on Saturday. My Dad is having his first today but has to travel to Colchester to have it, bloody miles away.
I assume it depends on your doctors surgery, even though we sre all in the same area.

In my area they have only started yesterday 20/1/21 and it's a 19 mile drive to the vaccination hub . It's absolutely ridiculous there are 2 places nearer one in a different county we are on the border and another is our local hospital but only using it for townspeople. It doesn't affect me as I will have to wait a while but feel very sorry for all the oldies/disabled who cannot drive and who are now having problems getting there.

OH is having his in 10 days. The lead in to this has been interesting. First he had a phone call from someone to tell him to expect a phone call. Week later a letter arrived but no follow up phone call. Went online to discover that the vaccine hub allocated was 60 miles away! Phoned GP to see what to do next as that seemed a bit extreme. Now booked locally for 10 days. I absolutely think that they are doing their best but a bit more joined up thinking might be a good thing.

The buzz I had about the vaccine has gone now “they” think it won’t work for the new variants coming (South Africa, Brazilian)

I’m back into my gloom of this will never end and this is our forever life now.

My mother is 86 and she got her letter last week. She's housebound and they expect her to get to Taunton for it. She lives near Exeter. There seems to be no way to ask for an alternative. Although she doesn't leave the house, she has carers coming in twice a day so she's still at risk. It's a worry.

Yes, this is what should happen, not discarding them. I was going to suggest fb/Twitter posts but I expect that may actually cause riots!

I had heard of them going out and getting random folks at the end of the day to use up the vaccine. Wonder if people will just hang around on the off chance?!

Worrying if this one doesn’t work against the new strains. From what I’ve heard, they seem fairly confident they can engineer the vaccines to respond ? but I feel like this will be with us, in some form or another, for years to come sadly.

My dad gets his next weekend. My mum is still waiting for her date. Other family members are having their first around now.

Don't worry too much. They said on radio 2 recently that they are confident the vaccine can be altered very quickly (within a few days) to deal with the new variants. Viruses mutate, it is why the flu jab changes every year. When developing the vaccines they will have considered this.
