Did anyone watch Channel 4 Supervet about the Bulldog

Are they not 'KC judges' like a BD judge? :p or does it not work like that?

ETA realise I should have picked a showing society instead :p

In theory it is meant to be a bit the same, although you don’t need to be tested or trained by the KC to be a dog show judge.
You do compare the dog in front of you to the KC breed standard.

in practice this often doesn’t happen.... ??

I think people need to get (the showing part of) Crufts out of their head, personally, I think it's a bit of a red herring. It's one dog show among thousands that take place up and down the country and for me, the short snapshot that people see on TV isn't a realistic representation of what is out there, for the same reason that people don't model all their wardrobe choices through what they see at the Oscars. And if they do, they are generally bitterly disappointed!!

I assume that the KC are happy with deformed dogs being shown at top level if they are winning prizes at shows like Crufts? The one that sticks out for me was the German Shepherds who could barely walk. If that had been a horse show surely they would have been asked to leave the ring, not given an rosette as a shining example of the breed.

As I and others have said before...Crufts isn't an event that people should base their dog-purchasing decisions on. It's just one large and high profile event. There are lots of other shows and lots of other disciplines and lots of other arenas in which to look at dogs.
I cannot speak for the KC as I have not played in their ballpit for quite some time.
But I've seen fat and lame horses win prizes too.

I did see this programme and it was horrendous what was wrong with that poor dog. I felt so sorry for the owners, they hadn't known enough to ask about health testing but did have the sense not to go to a BYB for all the good it did them. They have had a very painful learning curve. I hope they have better luck with the next dog they buy which I don't think will be a bulldog.

I think that’s half the problem CC. Crufts is high profile and will influence a lot of new-to-the-game dog owners who have set their sights on a specific breed. If Crufts/KC allow unhealthy dogs to be paraded & shown on TV with various knowledgeable ? presenters exclaiming how wonderful they are and a marvellous example of the breed, who are they (we) to argue?

I think social media is to blame a lot too.
Plenty of people thinking that dogs doing things that are a direct result of say their breathing issues cute or funny.

We (as a species) seem to like animals that look like us. So flat nosed dogs, even cats I think, rabbits, sheep, those Valios or whatever they are called (now they are cute). We want flat faces, for I assume a humanoid look. Wierd.

I’ve got, what a kind person would say, is a ‘Roman nose’. I think that’s why I like a long nosed type of dog? plus I’m not a fan of humans, so, yeah, good point!

OMG it STILL comes immediately to mind! I haven’t watched Crufts for a few years, i find it painful particularly watching the hound group, but I can STILL hear bloody Frank Kane talking about the fat greyhound with appalling movement “as fit as a fiddle and not an ounce of fat on it” ???? If you had put that greyhound on a track, or shown it a hare, it would have dropped down dead....

CC may have heard this particular rant many times before ?

And watching the Labradors lumber around with their bellies swaying from side to side.

Frank Kane should be shot.[not literally, obs]He can produce more drivel than full blown flu. Cannot bear him and don’t get me started on Peter Purves.....

We all enjoying the coverage of Westminster? One of my friends has just lost the plot over the Malinois ?
Had to watch it after your comment. The movement on some of them was dreadful. Elbows sticking out, straight stifles. One looked like a corgi on steroids. As an aside, I did catch a glimpse of my dog crush - the Smooth Collie - walking past in the background, sadly built like a tank, but it was worth watching!!

I don’t know how any dog lover could buy a bulldog these days. Their health problems are well documented. To choose to support breeding which renders the next generations incapable of breathing properly is morally reprehensible.
They are cute with their smushed faces but the price for that cuteness is quality of life.

And Spaniels so heavy set and fat they would get stuck in cover and not be capable of an hour in the beating line let alone a day...I do like the BASC ring at Crufts though I haven't been for years. As for Bulldogs they should be allowed to die out as a breed. the welfare issue of a dog that struggles just to breathe doesn't sit well with me. I met one at the beach, beautiful temprement but that was it, It sounded like a pig with a head cold, every btreath was a struggle, a bite so undershot the lower canines sat well forward of the uppers, giving it a gruffalo like appearance and sooo fat as it couldn't be excercised properly...poor thing I felt so sorry for it not being able to enjoy a good run.
